Taxi service Uber has reached a $178 million settlement in a case brought by thousands of taxi drivers against the American company. They filed a joint complaint against Uber in 2019 because they suffered a significant loss of income due to the taxi service's arrival in Australia in 2012.

Uber is allegedly using drivers who do not have a permit. According to the law firm, which has about 8,000 affected drivers, this is the fifth-highest settlement ever reached in a so-called class action in Australia.

“Uber fought the case tooth and nail, every day for five years, trying to avoid providing our group with any form of remedy or compensation for its losses. But after years of refusal, Uber withdrew.”

Uber said it had never knowingly broken the rules, and said state-level compensation schemes had been paid out in Australia since 2018. “With today’s settlement, it is clear we have put these legal issues behind us,” Uber said.
