England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland are likely to host the 2028 European Football Championship. Turkey was the only other candidate, but has withdrawn to focus on organizing the 2032 European Championship with Italy.
Turkey expects that it will not be able to compete adequately with the joint bid of the United Kingdom and Ireland to host the 2028 European Championship. Turkey and Italy are the only candidates for the 2032 European Championship.
The allocation of the 2028 and 2032 European Championships will be officially announced during a UEFA meeting next Tuesday.
England had previously organized the 1966 World Cup and the 1996 European Championship. It was the last European Championship to be held across Europe, and included the semi-finals and final at Wembley Stadium in London.
Italy was crowned champion of the last European Championship. Then national coach Roberto Mancini’s side were too strong for England in the final after a penalty shootout.
Next year’s European Championship will be held in Germany. The ten host cities are Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Dortmund, Leipzig, Gelsenkirchen, Stuttgart and Düsseldorf. Ticket sales for this European Championship began on Tuesday.
