    Southwest Flight WN2665 Makes Emergency Landing After Midair Windscreen Failure

    DALLAS, Texas — A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700 operating a scheduled domestic route between Albuquerque and Baltimore diverted to Tulsa on May 11 after the captain-side cockpit windscreen shattered while the aircraft was cruising at 31,000 feet.

    The aircraft, identified as Flight WN2665, departed Albuquerque International Sunport at approximately 10:55 a.m. local time for what was expected to be a routine three-hour flight to Baltimore/Washington International Airport. The 19-year-old Boeing 737-700 was more than an hour into the journey when the cockpit windscreen on the captain’s side began cracking before ultimately shattering during cruise over Oklahoma.

    Pilots declared an emergency and diverted the aircraft to Tulsa International Airport, where the plane landed safely without injuries to passengers or crew. Travelers were later transferred to another aircraft to continue to Baltimore.

    Cockpit Window Became Opaque During Flight

    According to details provided by passengers and airline officials, the incident escalated rapidly after visible cracks appeared on the outer pane of the left-side cockpit window. While cockpit windscreen cracks do not always require emergency action, the situation intensified when the damaged pane reportedly shattered and turned opaque, limiting visibility and raising concerns about the structural integrity of the window.

    The flight crew responded by initiating emergency procedures and rerouting the aircraft to Tulsa, one of the nearest suitable diversion airports. Aviation experts note that maintaining cockpit visibility and preserving cabin pressure are critical considerations during any windscreen malfunction at high altitude.

    Several passengers later observed the extent of the damage after disembarking in Tulsa. Images shared on social media showed significant cracking across the captain-side windscreen.

    Passenger Describes Incident

    Passenger George Gonzales shared a photograph of the damaged windscreen with local television outlet KRQE and described the sequence of events aboard the flight.

    “He stated that the flight crew confirmed nothing had struck the aircraft, and that the windshield began cracking before it shattered. He credited the pilots for landing the plane safely.”

    Southwest Airlines later confirmed the diversion in a statement, saying the aircraft landed safely after experiencing a windshield crack. The airline also said affected customers were reaccommodated on another aircraft to complete their trip to Baltimore.

    Boeing 737 Windscreens Built With Multiple Protective Layers

    Commercial aircraft cockpit windows are engineered to withstand significant stress, including pressure differentials, severe weather and potential bird strikes. The Boeing 737 windscreen system uses a layered structure consisting of an outer glass pane, an inner glass pane and a vinyl interlayer designed to maintain integrity even if one layer fails.

    The interlayer helps prevent rapid decompression and maintains a protective barrier between the cockpit and outside environment during partial failures. Industry analysts say the layered design likely contributed to the safe outcome of the Southwest incident.

    Although cockpit windscreen failures are rare, aviation maintenance specialists say cracks can result from several factors, including thermal stress, material fatigue, hail impact or bird strikes. Incidents occurring during cruise altitude are less common than those during takeoff or landing phases.

    Past Cockpit Windscreen Failures Highlight Aviation Risks

    The Southwest diversion recalls several high-profile cockpit window failures in commercial aviation history.

    In 2018, an Sichuan Airlines Airbus A319 suffered a catastrophic cockpit windscreen failure while flying at 32,000 feet over China. The first officer was partially pulled out of the cockpit before the captain successfully executed an emergency descent and landing in Chengdu.

    Another widely cited case occurred in 1990 involving a British Airways BAC One-Eleven. During climb, a cockpit windscreen panel separated from the aircraft, partially ejecting the captain from the cockpit. Crew members restrained the captain until the aircraft landed safely. He survived with injuries including fractures and frostbite.

    Safety Response Praised

    The successful handling of Southwest Flight WN2665 underscores the importance of redundant cockpit design systems and emergency training procedures within commercial aviation.

    The aircraft landed safely, no injuries were reported, and passengers reached their destination on a replacement aircraft later the same day. Aviation observers say the incident demonstrates how layered windscreen engineering and coordinated crew response can prevent a potentially serious mechanical failure from escalating into a catastrophe.
