A passenger aboard a SunExpress flight from Turkey to Germany was arrested after allegedly assaulting a flight attendant during a dispute over seating arrangements, with the incident escalating further when he reportedly insulted German police officers following the aircraft’s arrival.
The incident occurred on June 1, 2026, aboard a SunExpress flight traveling from Samsun (SZF) to Dusseldorf (DUS). Authorities said the 29-year-old passenger, a German resident of Turkish descent, refused to remain seated next to a female passenger, claiming the seating arrangement conflicted with his interpretation of Sharia law.
The flight attendant who attempted to resolve the disagreement was allegedly punched in the face by the passenger, according to reports first published by German media and later covered by aviation outlet OMAAT.

SunExpress, a leisure airline jointly owned by Lufthansa (LH) and Turkish Airlines (TK), was operating the flight when the incident unfolded.
According to available reports, the passenger objected to sitting beside a woman because he believed such an arrangement violated his interpretation of Islamic religious law. Under the interpretation cited by the passenger, interaction or physical contact with a person of the opposite sex who is not a close relative or spouse should occur only when necessary.
