Saudi Carrier’s First Airbus Narrowbody Nears Completion in Hamburg
HAMBURG — Riyadh Air is preparing to receive its first Airbus A321neo as the Saudi Arabian carrier accelerates the development of a mixed fleet designed to support regional and long-haul expansion.
New photographs shared by the airline on September 2 show the single-aisle aircraft undergoing final assembly at Airbus’ manufacturing facility in Hamburg, Germany. The jet, which already carries Riyadh Air’s distinctive tail design, is expected to be delivered before the end of 2026.
The aircraft is the first of 60 A321neo Family jets ordered by Riyadh Air. Its arrival will give the carrier a smaller and more flexible aircraft to operate alongside its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, allowing it to serve routes that may not require the capacity of a widebody jet.
Riyadh Air’s narrowbody investment is central to its plan to build a network of more than 100 destinations by 2030. The airline is positioning Riyadh as an international aviation hub while supporting Saudi Arabia’s broader effort to expand tourism, trade and business connectivity.
First A321neo Advances Through Final Assembly
The first Riyadh Air A321neo is progressing through the final stages of production before entering ground testing, flight testing and delivery preparations. Airbus’ Hamburg operation is one of the manufacturer’s principal assembly locations for the A320 Family.
Riyadh Air selected CFM International LEAP-1A engines for the fleet in November 2025. The carrier placed a firm order for 120 engines, including spare units, to power all 60 aircraft covered by its Airbus narrowbody agreement.
Fuel Efficiency Supports Fleet Strategy
Airbus says the A321neo can deliver more than 20% lower fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions compared with the previous-generation A321ceo. The efficiency gains are supported by newer engines, aerodynamic improvements and wingtip devices known as Sharklets.
Those operating advantages could help Riyadh Air control fuel expenses as it adds routes across the Middle East and into international markets. Fuel remains one of the largest expenses for airlines, making newer and more efficient aircraft an important component of long-term cost management.
The A321neo also provides sufficient range for many medium-haul services, giving Riyadh Air the ability to test new destinations without deploying a larger Boeing 787.
Order Establishes Airbus as Narrowbody Supplier
Riyadh Air announced its order for 60 A321neo Family aircraft during the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh on October 30, 2024. The agreement established Airbus as the supplier of the carrier’s narrowbody fleet after the airline had already selected Boeing aircraft for its initial widebody operations.
The A321neo order is expected to support routes where demand does not justify the capacity of a 787-9. It will also give the airline additional flexibility in scheduling flights and increasing service frequency in selected markets.
Executive Traveller reported that Riyadh Air’s A321 aircraft will feature two-abreast premium recliner seats in business class and a conventional 3-3 layout in economy class.
The publication also reported that half of the 60-aircraft order will consist of longer-range A321LR jets. Riyadh Air, however, has not publicly released a complete breakdown of the configurations planned for each aircraft.
Widebody Fleet Continues to Expand
Boeing 787s Anchor Long-Haul Operations
The A321neo is taking shape as Riyadh Air expands its initial fleet around the Boeing 787-9. The airline received its first two 787-9 Dreamliners in Saudi Arabia on June 5, 2026, marking a significant step in its transition from startup preparations to commercial operations.
Boeing confirmed in July that Riyadh Air had exercised options for 28 additional 787 aircraft. The agreement included the conversion of 20 aircraft to the larger 787-10, which offers greater passenger capacity for high-demand routes.
Airbus A350-1000s Planned for Future Growth
Riyadh Air is also developing an Airbus widebody fleet. The company has firm commitments for 31 A350-1000 aircraft, including six additional jets confirmed at the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow, according to AeroTime.
The planned combination of A321neos, A350-1000s and Boeing 787s will allow the airline to match aircraft size and range with different markets. Narrowbody jets are expected to support regional and medium-haul operations, while the Dreamliner and A350 fleets will serve longer international routes.
With its first A321neo approaching completion, Riyadh Air is moving closer to operating the diverse fleet required to pursue its ambitious network strategy. The 60 Airbus narrowbodies are expected to become an important part of the carrier’s regional growth as it works toward serving more than 100 destinations by the end of the decade.
