WASHINGTON (AP/RTR) – US President Joe Biden said he is considering a request from Australia over the fate of Julian Assange, the Australian founder of WikiLeaks. The judiciary in the United States wants to prosecute Assange for his role in publishing secret or confidential information through WikiLeaks.
It mainly concerns the dissemination of diplomatic messages and US military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2010. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called in January for Assange to return to his homeland.
A whole series of charges have been brought against Assange, and in all, he could be sentenced to up to 170 years in prison in the United States. Assange has been trying to escape American justice in London for twelve years. He holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in the British capital for seven years. When they showed him the door, he was locked in London's notorious Belmarsh Prison, where he has been held since 2019.
Assange is waging a legal battle not to be extradited to the United States. He almost lost in London, but recently had the opportunity to appeal the court's decision in his case. Albanese shouted desperately that this could not continue and that Assange must finally go home, whatever you think of the man.
