According to Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, the security situation for Jews in Morocco is better than in New York and Europe. He visited Essaouira after celebrating Purim with thousands of his students in Manhattan.
During a spiritual trip through Morocco, reported by I24, Rabbi Pinto said, “The situation of Jews in Morocco is better than it is in New York and Europe, thanks to the policies of King Mohammed VI and the security forces.” He arrived in the Kingdom late this week after celebrating Purim with thousands of his students in Manhattan.

During his trip to Morocco, the Israeli-Moroccan rabbi visited the coastal resort of Essaouira, where Rabbi Tzadek Chaim Pinto, who died in 1845, was buried. He took the opportunity to recite a special prayer for peace for all Jews in the world. “We all pray that peace will come soon in the Land of Israel and throughout the world,” Rabbi Pinto said. “And I hope that we will soon have the opportunity to witness the end of strict justice and the spread of grace and mercy in the world.”

Today, about 3,000 Jews live in Morocco – the largest Jewish population in North Africa – compared to a quarter of a million in the past. In 2020, there were approximately one million Moroccan Jews and Jews of Moroccan origin in Israel, out of a total population of 9.1 million.
