videoBreda – In his hometown of Breda, Milan Albecher (44) is still able to walk normally. In Breda (Iowa) he is a celebrity and was even on the front page of the local newspaper, the Breda News!
Albecher works in information technology and has been dedicated to the United States since 2004. I had seen that a little bit in Europe and wanted something different. After one try I was sold. Since then I go there once or twice a year, rent a nice American car and drive thousands of kilometres. I’ve been to every state except Alaska and Hawaii. People are generally friendly and open, and curious about what you do. The diversity is huge. Big cities, nature parks and villages such as Breda.
(Text continues below the video. In the video: Milan Albecher, owner of the Heart Attack Grill restaurant in Las Vegas. Everything points to a clinic in the restaurant. Anyone who does not finish his dish is beaten. Albecher always goes looking in the United States for anecdotes, like this restaurant)
He prepares those road trips extensively. “I don’t really like tourist places, I look for oddities. Often these are works of art, like a Cadillac ranch, and ten Cadillacs with their noses in the ground. It’s a public exhibition, people can come with their own spray can. NAC there. Unfortunately, something has already been sprayed again.
BBQ heart attack
He also visited a two-room hotel in the shape of a dog, a Boeing 727 designed like a house in the middle of a forest, the Eiffel Tower (in Paris, Texas, of course), and the Heart Attack Grill restaurant in Las Vegas. “Everything in this restaurant suggests a clinic. There’s a doctor walking around, and the waitresses are dressed as nurses. You have to wear a surgical gown when you arrive and you get wine from an IV bag. And if you don’t finish your plate, you get hit on by the waitress. You left one bite of your hamburger.” Mine on purpose…” (Watch the video)

While searching the Internet, he came across Breda, Iowa. “I have to go there, I thought. I went to spec in 2014. There’s one place where you can get something to eat, Kay Corner. When I walked in, people looked at me as if someone had landed from outer space. ‘What are you doing here?’ ‘ “I’m from Breda, Netherlands,” I said. They immediately called the local newspaper, The Breda News! A journalist came to do an interview and take a photo. You still come across Dutch names there, but I have a real feeling that they knew nothing about Breda before I arrived.
Photo album
“I enjoyed that visit so much that I returned in 2016, with a gift of a photo album of what Breda looks like. They loved them, and even ordered ten more. This year, in September, I was there for the third time.
However, Breda is not his favorite place, it is San Francisco. “I come there often and now I have good friends who live there. By the way, in different places in America, it is always fun.
Speaking of convenience, Breda, Iowa has a notable resemblance to Breda, which boasts a high density of bars. In about 1900, the city was nicknamed “Wet City”, because there were so many saloons, about ten for a population of no more than 400 people…
The closest motel to Breda is at least 20 miles away. Not very useful after an evening at Red’s.
“Right now Red’s is the only bar. Nice tent, you know. And the people are very hospitable. When I announced my arrival, they immediately offered that I could sleep at someone’s house. Fortunately, the nearest hotel is at least 20 miles away. Not yet convenient.” Spend an evening at Red’s…”
He immigrated
Milan’s work in the field of information technology is international, so what prevents him from immigrating? “I’m busy with that. My employer Cap Gemini is also in the US. I hope I can start working there within the next year.”
From Breda, Netherlands to Breda, Iowa? “No, I prefer San Francisco.”
