“Bickering” between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton became such that the Queen was driven between palaces to stop it, an author claims.
Royal author Tom Quinn claims Her Majesty was taken from Buckingham Palace to Kensington Palace to “try to stop the bickering” as told by a palace insider, the Daily Star reports.
Suggestions of a rift between the sisters-in-law have been covered in a number of books on the younger royals, though with differing accounts.
In Kensington Palace ‘An Intimate Memoir from Queen Mary to Meghan Markle ‘, Quinn writes: “At first the couples got on well – William and Harry have always been close – but inevitably there were tensions.
“As one insider explains, ‘both William and Harry were always likely to be drawn to confident, strong women because they lost their mother so early.”
The insider continues: “(Kate) was very warm towards Meghan when she arrived.
“But tensions were bound to arise because Meghan inevitably had to accept that that although she is a Duchess she is not married to the next king.
“I think she has found that difficult to deal with and although Harry loved their cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace, Meghan and conscious that it was tiny in comparison to the vast apartment complex where Kate and William live.
“Harry has nothing to prove. Meghan has everything to prove. That’s the problem.
“I know, for example, that tensions reached such a pitch that the Queen herself was driven to Kensington from Buckingham Palace to try to stop the bickering.”
However others have suggested Meghan and Kate weren’t duelling but “just had nothing in common.”
Authors of the Meghan and Harry biography Finding Freedom claim there was no feud between the pair and rubbished claims that Kate was left in tears after one incident.
Its writers claim Meghan had hoped Kate would reach out to her but “didn’t lose sleep” over it when she did not.
The alleged rift between the two couples stemmed from a growing coolness between Harry and William and not Meghan and Kate, according to co-authors Carolyn Durand and Omid Scobie.
They say the press were too quick to blame Meghan and Harry’s decision to move to Windsor on the “duelling duchesses” when it was Harry who felt suffocated by his brother.
The authors wrote: “The truth was that Meghan and Kate just didn’t know each other that well.”
Finding Freedom reveals the Sussexes’ growing bitterness towards the royal family and monarchy while trying to debunk certain alleged myths.
It insists rumours that Meghan made Kate cry during a bridesmaid’s dress fitting for Princess Charlotte are false.
Authors claim the duchesses’ relationship had not really progressed from when they had first met, and that Meghan was disappointed by Kate’s lack of support during her roughest times with the press.
Reports that Meghan’s “strict demands” had left Kate in tears “puzzled” those who were present.
