An IndiGo flight traveling from Doha to Bengaluru was diverted to Muscat after an operating crew member required urgent medical attention, prompting the airline to deploy a replacement aircraft and fresh crew to complete the journey.
IndiGo Flight 6E1302 Makes Unscheduled Landing in Oman
IndiGo flight 6E1302 departed Hamad International Airport in Doha for Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru but changed course after the medical emergency developed onboard Thursday.
The Airbus A321neo landed safely at Muscat International Airport, where medical personnel attended to the affected crew member. IndiGo said the diversion was necessary to address the medical situation and protect the safety of passengers and the operating crew.
The carrier did not report any technical problem with the aircraft. The diversion was attributed solely to the crew member’s need for urgent medical care.
Operational rules and aviation safety procedures generally require airlines to reassess whether a flight can continue when a pilot or another essential crew member becomes unable to perform assigned duties. Depending on the circumstances, diverting to the nearest suitable airport may be necessary.
Replacement Aircraft and Crew Sent to Muscat
Passengers were unable to immediately resume their journey aboard the original aircraft following the landing in Oman. IndiGo arranged another aircraft and a new operating crew to transport them from Muscat to Bengaluru.
The airline provided refreshments and regular updates to passengers while they waited for the replacement service. IndiGo also apologized for the disruption and said it was working to limit the impact on travelers.
No passenger injuries were reported in connection with the medical diversion. Details about the crew member’s condition were not disclosed.
The incident affected an important international route linking Qatar with Bengaluru, one of India’s largest technology and business centers. Muscat’s location and airport infrastructure made it a suitable diversion point for the flight.
IndiGo reiterated that the safety of its customers, employees and aircraft remained its highest priority.
Separate IndiGo Flight Returns to Goa After Engine Warning
The Muscat diversion followed a separate operational disruption involving an IndiGo flight departing from Goa for Delhi.
Flight 6E2102 took off from Manohar International Airport at 9:16 a.m. with 229 people onboard. The pilot subsequently reported a suspected engine failure and requested permission to return to the airport.
A full emergency was declared at 9:25 a.m., allowing airport emergency personnel to prepare for the aircraft’s arrival. The flight landed safely in Goa at 9:50 a.m., and no injuries among passengers or crew members were reported.
DGCA Expected to Inspect Aircraft
The aircraft was removed from service and placed under maintenance checks following the emergency landing. IndiGo said the flight crew followed standard operating procedures after detecting the technical issue, notified the appropriate authorities and returned safely to the departure airport.
A team from India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation was expected to inspect the aircraft as part of the regulatory review. The carrier said the plane would return to service only after receiving the required clearances.
Passengers remained in the terminal while IndiGo arranged alternative transportation to Delhi. The airline supplied refreshments and issued updates as those arrangements were being made.
Although both events disrupted IndiGo services, they occurred under different circumstances. The Doha-Bengaluru flight diverted to Muscat because of a crew medical emergency, while the Goa-Delhi service returned after a suspected engine problem.
In both cases, the aircraft landed safely and the airline initiated alternative travel arrangements. The incidents underscore the operational challenges airlines face when responding to unexpected medical and technical emergencies while limiting disruption to passengers.
