Tessa's long bike ride from Sparendam with her boyfriend Marco began, and ended with the first kilometers towards Australia. Yesterday, they were waved in by friends and family in the Frisian village of Riptsgerk, where Marco is from. From there they biked to Giethoorn to continue the journey today.

When travel started to pick up again a year ago, Tessa started looking for different ways to travel the world. She wants to try something new, and after doing some online searching, she comes across long bike rides. “Then I came up with the idea of traveling by bike to Australia, a country I had always wanted to go to.”

In the last weeks before her departure, she was mainly occupied with saying goodbye. “Those moments with friends and family were the most important to me because we have been away for a very long time. We have also been busy packing and purchasing the last parts.

The couple believes they will spend about a year and a half on their cycling trip to Australia. Along the way they stay in people's homes and go wild camping to save money. Once they reach the final island in Indonesia, they board a plane to their final destination, Darwin.

Once you arrive in Australia, they apply for a visa that allows you to work and travel at the same time. “It is valid for one year. Then we have enough time to discover the country and get to know the people. Ultimately, the idea is to return by plane.”
