The Australian Bureau of Meteorology warns of a heatwave in the states of Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Tasmania, with temperatures that could reach 40 degrees or more.
Moomba Festival
The Moomba Festival show in Victoria's capital, Melbourne, which was scheduled to take place on Monday, has been canceled “to ensure the safety of our performers, spectators, staff and volunteers,” the organization said. Because participants often have to walk in full sun, and often wear heavy costumes, organizers say they are not responsible for holding the show. The festival itself can continue, because there are enough shaded areas and water available.
'Extreme fire hazard'
Melbourne's Yarraville Festival, which includes a dog show and outdoor entertainment, has been postponed by a week due to high temperatures. Organizers of the Pitch Music and Arts Festival in southwest Victoria moved program elements on Saturday after firefighters warned of a “severe fire danger” on the day.
Last month, Australia lost 22,000 hectares of land to bushfires in Australia. Between July 2019 and March 2020, 33 people died in bushfires and about 24 million hectares of land burned.
