Jennifer Hermoso felt especially grateful on Friday after her successful return to the Spanish women’s national team. She scored the winning goal as a substitute towards the end in the European Nations League match with Italy (0-1).

“I couldn’t have hoped for a better comeback,” the 33-year-old striker told the Spanish newspaper afterwards. “I feel good again, also because I scored the winning goal. I can’t help but laugh now.” TVE.

Hermoso had a hard time after then national president Luis Rubiales kissed her on the mouth after winning the World Cup final. Rubiales claimed that the kiss was consensual. After the uproar, he reluctantly decided to resign from his position as president.

Last September, Hermoso was not included in the Spanish squad for the first two matches in the European Nations League. National team coach Montserrat Tomé said at the time that she wanted to protect Hermoso, but the Mexican Pachuca player did not see that as necessary.

“I was thinking about a lot of things after I scored the goal,” Hermoso said. “Sometimes life gives you little gifts. I thought especially of the people who have stood behind me all this time. Thanks to them I can enjoy football again.”

The victory means Spain remains at the top of Group D in the European Nations League. Tommy’s side will play an away match against Switzerland on Tuesday, who are winless at the bottom after three games.
