Jorinde van Klinken was unable to play for the World Cup medal in discus at night from Wednesday to Thursday. The 22-year-old Assense finished fourth in her first final at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Van Klinken had the best distance in six attempts at 64.97 metres. China’s Bin Feng won the gold with 69.12, the silver went to Croatia’s Sandra Berkowicz (68.45), and the bronze went to American favorite Valarie Allman (68.30).

Van Klinken’s fourth place is the best ever discus performance by a Dutch athlete at a World Cup. Rhea Stallman, the 1984 Olympic champion, finished seventh at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki.

Three years ago at the Doha World Cup, Van Klinken didn’t qualify, and last summer at the Tokyo Olympics, she didn’t make the final fight.

Van Klinken wanted to follow the example of the painter

Van Klinken is also active as a shot putter and has also competed in this segment at the World Championships in Eugene. She didn’t make it to the final and then saw her compatriot Jessica Schilder win the bronze medal. Van Klinken wanted to follow this example in the last discus fight.

Van Klinken, who lives in the United States, has made great strides in recent years. Last year she took first place in the world rankings for a long time with a throw of 70.22 metres. In the final in Eugene, she did not approach 70 meters.

Van Klinken shot 64.97 on her fifth attempt, while Feng already scored 69.12 on her first attempt which turned out to be a golden throw.

Next month, Van Klinken will also compete in the European Championships in Munich, then wants to win a medal in both the shot put and the discus.
