LONDON (AP/RTR/AFP) – A British man has admitted spying for Russia while working at the British Embassy in Germany. He is being tried in his home country for passing on personal data and collecting information “useful to the enemy”.
The 58-year-old worked for eight years as a security guard for the embassy in Berlin. He was arrested by German authorities in August 2021 on suspicion of transferring documents for a fee. It was later delivered to the United Kingdom.
British media wrote that the man had been spying for at least ten months. Share information about embassy activities and staff contact details. It is said that the man hated his homeland and was angry that the rainbow flag was raised in support of the LGBTI community.
The man pleaded guilty to eight of the nine charges against him on November 4, but that information has not yet been made public. It only happened on Friday, after prosecutors decided to drop the ninth count. An upcoming hearing is expected in February next year. The Briton can be sentenced to 14 years in prison.
