Arizona will have Matthew Ryan available again short term. The Australian goalkeeper was eliminated with his country by South Korea on Friday in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup.
Australia were still on their way to the semi-finals midway through the match at Al Janoub Stadium in Qatar. Former Sparta Rotterdam striker Craig Goodwin gave the Socceroos the lead.
However, it was the South Koreans who won. In extra time, Hwang Hee-chan made it 1-1 from a penalty kick, and superstar Son Heung-min scored the winner in extra time. Shortly afterwards, Australian Aiden O'Neill was sent off.
Australia's elimination is good news for Arizona, as Ryan has already had to miss six games (partially due to injury). The experienced goalkeeper was replaced by Roma's talented Jayden Owusu-Oduro.
The South Korean national team will meet Jordan in the semi-finals of the Asian Cup, which beat Tajikistan 1-0 earlier today, Friday. The other semi-finalists come from the quarter-finals between Iran and Japan and Qatar versus Uzbekistan. With Alireza Jahanbakhsh (Iran) and Ayase Ueda (Japan), there are still two Feyenoord players in the tournament.
Alkmaar will play at home against Feyenoord in the Dutch League on Sunday. This match will come very early for Ryan. The two teams will meet again on Wednesday, but then in a cup match in De Kuip.
