Anna Delphi Sorokin, the 31-year-old con artist who pretended to be a wealthy German heiress and thus deceived New York society and banks, was supposed to be deported to Germany but, according to AFP, still resides in the United States. This is what the US immigration authorities announced. Sorokin’s story was used in the Netflix series Inventing Anna, which has since been streamed millions of times.

On Monday, various US media reported that Sorokin had been released by the US Immigration Service, where she was detained after her visa expired. The “fake social person” was supposed to be put on a plane bound for Frankfurt, but that doesn’t seem to have happened. Anna is still being held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to AFP.

Sorokin was sentenced to a maximum of 12 years in prison in 2019, but was released just under four years later. Her lawyer, Manny Arora, says her client hopes to stay in New York, “where she built a life.”

Anna went to New York in 2013 at the age of 22 and pretended to be a wealthy heiress, when in fact she was the daughter of Russian immigrants in Germany without a fortune. Her father was a truck driver and later a businessman. She knew everything and everyone and was told that she had a trust fund of $67 million to her name. Without paying, I ate in the most luxurious restaurants, slept in the most expensive hotels and even managed to use a private jet.
