American Airlines is making sweeping adjustments to its international network for the Northern Winter 2026–27 season, revising aircraft assignments, suspending certain routes during lower-demand periods, and adjusting flight frequencies across several global markets.
The Fort Worth-based carrier has filed multiple updates affecting long-haul operations to Europe, Asia, and South America from major U.S. hubs including Charlotte, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Los Angeles, New York JFK, and Philadelphia. The revised schedule reflects efforts to better match aircraft capacity with seasonal travel demand while optimizing fleet usage across its Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 widebody aircraft.
Network Strategy Focused on Demand
American Airlines continues to refine its international network as part of broader efforts to align capacity with expected winter travel patterns. The latest changes include aircraft upgrades, aircraft downgrades, temporary route suspensions, and seasonal service adjustments.
Many of the updates focus on the airline’s largest international gateways—particularly Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Miami International Airport—which handle a substantial portion of American’s long-haul traffic.
According to aviation data tracking sources, some of the aircraft adjustments were already visible in reservation systems but had not previously been reported in detail.
Charlotte Hub Adjustments
Several changes affect transatlantic flights from Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
The Charlotte–London Heathrow route will see aircraft adjustments beginning October 25, 2026. Flights AA730 and AA731 will operate with the Boeing 777-200ER throughout the winter season. However, between November 18 and December 16, flights AA734 and AA735 will temporarily operate with the larger Boeing 777-300ER.
Charlotte’s route to Munich will continue daily service with the Boeing 777-200ER starting November 1, 2026, though flight numbers will change from AA784/785 to AA762/763.
Meanwhile, service from Charlotte to Rome Fiumicino will end earlier than originally planned. The daily Boeing 777-200ER service will now conclude on October 24 rather than continuing into late November.
Chicago Seasonal Changes
Chicago O’Hare International Airport will also see adjustments.
The seasonal Chicago–Madrid route will be suspended from December 1, 2026, through March 3, 2027. Service is scheduled to resume slightly earlier than previously planned, restarting on March 4.
Chicago’s route to Paris Charles de Gaulle will continue operating daily with the Boeing 787-8 through November 30 before ending for the winter season.
Dallas/Fort Worth Long-Haul Updates
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport—American’s largest hub—will experience the most extensive schedule changes.
Seasonal service between Dallas/Fort Worth and Barcelona will pause from November 19, 2026, to March 2, 2027. The route had been operating daily using Boeing 787-8 aircraft.
Flights between Dallas/Fort Worth and Buenos Aires will briefly switch to Boeing 777-200ER aircraft from October 25 through October 31.
Several European routes from Dallas/Fort Worth will also see aircraft swaps or temporary suspensions. The Frankfurt route will pause operations from February 11 through March 3, while Madrid flights will use Boeing 787-9 aircraft instead of Boeing 777-200ERs between December 2 and March 3.
The Dallas/Fort Worth–Tokyo Haneda service will operate daily using Boeing 777-200ER aircraft beginning October 25, replacing earlier plans for a mix of Boeing 787-9 and 777-300ER aircraft.
Additional changes include aircraft swaps on routes to Paris, London Heathrow, Rome, and Rio de Janeiro, reflecting the airline’s strategy to match capacity with fluctuating seasonal demand.
Los Angeles and Pacific Routes
At Los Angeles International Airport, American Airlines will temporarily reduce service to Auckland.
Between December 3 and December 15, flights will drop from seven weekly departures to three weekly flights using Boeing 777-200ER aircraft. Daily service is expected to resume on December 16.
The Los Angeles–London Heathrow route will also see aircraft changes, with flight AA134/135 switching to Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and flight AA136/137 transitioning to Boeing 787-9 beginning October 25.
Miami International Network Changes
Miami International Airport, another key gateway for American’s international operations, will see several adjustments across both European and South American routes.
The Miami–Barcelona route will alternate between Boeing 777-200ER and Boeing 787-8 aircraft during different parts of the season. Meanwhile, the airline plans to increase flights between Miami and Rio de Janeiro to 14 weekly departures for the entire winter season using a mix of Boeing 777-200ER and 787-8 aircraft.
Service changes will also affect routes to Madrid, Milan, Montevideo, Paris, and Santiago, with some flights suspended, others rescheduled, and several aircraft substitutions planned.
Changes at New York JFK and Philadelphia
New York’s JFK Airport will see the introduction of year-round service to Barcelona using the Airbus A321XLR beginning October 25, marking a shift toward narrowbody aircraft on some transatlantic routes.
The airline will also implement multiple aircraft changes on flights between JFK and London Heathrow, as well as adjustments to services to Madrid, Milan, and Paris.
Philadelphia International Airport will also experience several updates. The Airbus A321XLR will replace Boeing 787-8 aircraft on select routes including Amsterdam and Edinburgh during parts of the winter schedule. Seasonal service to Athens will end earlier than previously scheduled.

The broad range of aircraft swaps, seasonal suspensions, and schedule adjustments highlights American Airlines’ continued effort to optimize its long-haul network during periods of lower winter demand.
