Carrier to Launch Auckland Service as New Airport Prepares for International Operations
AUCKLAND — Air New Zealand will become the first international airline to operate scheduled passenger flights to Western Sydney International Airport (WSI), marking a major milestone for Australia’s newest aviation hub. The airline will begin three weekly flights between Auckland and the new airport on October 26, capitalizing on strong trans-Tasman travel demand while expanding its presence in the Sydney market.
The new service is expected to strengthen travel links between New Zealand and Western Sydney, where a large community of New Zealand expatriates is expected to provide consistent passenger demand. Despite the expansion, Air New Zealand confirmed it has no plans to reduce operations at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, instead positioning the new route as an additional option for travelers.
Flight Schedule Targets Business and Visiting Friends and Relatives Markets
Air New Zealand’s inaugural schedule will see flights depart Auckland at 6 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, arriving at Western Sydney International Airport at 7:45 a.m. local Sydney time. Return services will leave WSI at 8:55 a.m. the same days and land back in Auckland at 2:10 p.m. local time.
Kathryn O’Brien, Air New Zealand’s general manager for Australia, said the airline expects the route to appeal to both corporate travelers and those visiting family members.
“There will certainly be a component of our customers that will be business markets,” she told the Herald. “But due to the large community of New Zealanders in Western Sydney, that ‘visiting friends and relatives’ market will be particularly strong as well.”
Western Sydney International Airport is located about 53 kilometers west of Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport and approximately 58 kilometers from Sydney’s central business district, offering an alternative gateway for passengers traveling to the rapidly growing western suburbs.
Earlier Launch Reflects Fleet Recovery
Air New Zealand had previously anticipated launching services to the airport in mid-2027. However, improvements in returning previously grounded aircraft to service enabled the airline to accelerate its plans by several months.
The airline has faced financial challenges in recent years, citing slower-than-expected recovery in New Zealand’s domestic travel market. Nevertheless, executives remain optimistic about demand across the Tasman Sea.
“We’ve seen some great business going across the Tasman, and we’re particularly happy from an Australia and New Zealand point of sale,” she said.
The earlier launch highlights renewed confidence in international travel demand between Australia and New Zealand, one of the busiest short-haul international markets in the region.
Aircraft, Pricing and Passenger Services
Air New Zealand will operate the Auckland-Western Sydney route using internationally configured Airbus A320 and Airbus A321 narrowbody aircraft. The aircraft will feature economy seating only and will not offer the airline’s Business Premier cabin typically found on long-haul services.
O’Brien said fleet deployment could change depending on market performance.
“At this point, we will operate with those jets only, but with any route that we operate, any network plan, we always review, and we’ll closely monitor performance and customer uptake,” O’Brien said.
Introductory one-way “seat only” fares from Auckland to Western Sydney International Airport will begin at $319.
The airport will not initially feature a dedicated Air New Zealand lounge, although the airline said discussions are underway regarding alternative lounge access for eligible passengers.
“Third-party lounge options will be confirmed closer to the start of operation … So we’ll provide that information to our customers closer to the time,” O’Brien added.

New Airport Designed to Support Long-Term Growth
According to O’Brien, the new airport complements rather than replaces Air New Zealand’s existing Sydney operations. She described Western Sydney International as providing “additional growth and capacity” into Australia’s largest city while praising its modern terminal facilities.
WSI Chief Executive Simon Hickey said the arrival of Air New Zealand’s services would expand travel choices for business travelers, tourists and families visiting relatives across the Tasman. He also highlighted the airport’s digital-first passenger experience designed to improve check-in and terminal efficiency.
The new airport addresses long-standing capacity constraints at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, where overnight curfews restrict aircraft movements between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Limited surrounding land has also constrained future expansion opportunities at Sydney’s primary airport.
Airport Built for Future Aviation Demand
Western Sydney International Airport, officially known as Nancy-Bird Walton Airport, is named after the pioneering Australian aviator often referred to as the “Angel of the Outback.”
The airport is operated by Western Sydney Airport Co Limited, a Federal Government-owned company established in 2017. The Australian Government committed up to A$5.3 billion toward the project in that year’s federal budget, with construction beginning in September 2018.
Designed with a Code F-capable runway, the airport can accommodate the world’s largest commercial aircraft, including the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380, as well as large cargo aircraft such as the Antonov AN-124. In October last year, a New South Wales Rural Fire Service Boeing 737 air tanker became the first jet aircraft to land at the new airport.
With Air New Zealand set to inaugurate international passenger services later this year, Western Sydney International Airport will begin a new chapter in Australia’s aviation network, providing additional capacity while offering travelers another gateway into one of the country’s fastest-growing regions.
