Investigation Into Flight AI-171 Advances Toward Completion

AHMEDABAD — India’s investigation into the deadly Air India Flight AI-171 crash has entered its final phase, with authorities completing major portions of the technical and operational analysis tied to the accident involving a Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu confirmed that investigators with the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) are nearing completion of the final report while continuing to follow international aviation investigation standards.

The crash, which occurred shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad last year, claimed 260 lives, including passengers, crew members, and people on the ground. The accident remains one of the most significant aviation disasters involving Air India in recent years.

Officials said the probe has progressed through detailed evaluations of aircraft systems, flight recorder data, engine performance, maintenance history, and operational procedures as investigators work to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the crash.

    Technical Review Nears Completion

According to officials familiar with the investigation, the AAIB has completed advanced analysis involving the aircraft’s systems and onboard data. Investigators have also reviewed maintenance documentation and operational records connected to the Boeing 787-8 aircraft involved in the incident.

The bureau continues to coordinate with specialist teams and accredited international representatives contributing technical expertise to the investigation. Authorities said the current phase focuses on integrating findings from multiple technical areas, including mechanical systems, flight operations, and human factors analysis.

Investigators are working to ensure that all available evidence is verified before conclusions are finalized. The review process is being conducted under international civil aviation standards designed to maintain the independence and credibility of accident investigations.

“The process remains deliberate and methodical,” officials said, emphasizing that accuracy is being prioritized over speed as the final report is prepared.

Minister Says Probe Following International Standards

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu stated that authorities are avoiding any procedural shortcuts as the investigation enters its concluding stage.

“He noted that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is strictly following international protocols to avoid procedural gaps. According to him, investigators are ensuring that no step is rushed or bypassed during the analysis.”

The minister said the complexity of the accident requires investigators to thoroughly examine all contributing factors before issuing final conclusions.

“He added that the government is awaiting the final findings, which are expected after complete verification of technical and scientific evidence. Officials maintain that procedural discipline remains central to the ongoing work.”

Naidu’s remarks come amid continued public attention surrounding the progress of the investigation and questions regarding when the final report will be released.

No Fixed Timeline for Final AAIB Report

Authorities have not provided a specific timeline for publication of the final accident report. The AAIB said the report will only be issued after all technical evaluations and international review procedures required under ICAO Annex 13 guidelines are completed.

The bureau is continuing to analyze integrated data sets to confirm consistency across technical findings. Officials indicated that additional specialist assessments could still be conducted if investigators determine further review is necessary.

The AAIB also reiterated its commitment to maintaining an independent, evidence-based investigative process throughout the final stages of the inquiry.

In a statement, authorities again expressed condolences to the families affected by the crash and acknowledged the long-term impact of the tragedy on victims’ relatives and the broader aviation community.

    Industry Awaits Findings

The final report is expected to provide the most comprehensive reconstruction yet of the events leading up to the AI-171 accident. Aviation industry observers are closely monitoring the investigation’s outcome, particularly because it involves the Boeing 787 platform and operational procedures connected to one of India’s largest carriers.

Once released, the report could include safety recommendations aimed at airlines, manufacturers, maintenance operators, and regulators to help prevent similar accidents in the future.

For now, investigators continue to focus on validating evidence and completing the final review process before formally closing the inquiry into the AI-171 disaster.
