Viewers shocked by 'prison team' during Switzerland-Italy match

Viewers shocked by 'prison team' during Switzerland-Italy match

Brian Rodriguez, June 29, 2024

Switzerland won the hearts of many football fans in the match against Italy. The Alpine country's game can rely on due compliments, while Italy can rely on criticism. The difficult mistakes made by the European champions are not appreciated – many viewers believe that Stephane El Shaarawy deserved a red card.

The article continues below the video

In the closing minutes of the first half, El Shaarawy committed a serious foul on Fabian Schar, who had injured his ankle. Referee Szymon Marciniak allowed him to escape with a yellow card and it was not ruled out by the video assistant referee. The infringement was not highlighted by NOS during the break, although analyst Dean Gorey believes Italy are playing “a kind of anti-football sport”.

Fellow analyst Ibrahim Afellay waxes lyrical about Switzerland. “It's great fun from a Swiss point of view. Switzerland dominates on all fronts. In losing the ball, in winning the ball… they impose their will on Italy. Italy is not involved at all. I feel like I am watching Spain and Italy again. Switzerland is very good at dealing With the ball, however, things often go wrong in the final stage.

It is clear that VAR technology exists on the beach..
Makes sense with this weather…
Strange violation! #zwiita @Euro2024

These Italians are trying to kick the Swiss out of the match. If they feel they are being touched, they will die for fifteen minutes. I hate that so much! #zwiita

Shameful display from the European champions. Let's hope this anti-footballer doesn't win. Parking a bus with 11 people on it is not worthy of a champion. #zwiita

In any other random match this would have been red. #Al-Shaarawy #zwiita #VAR? #Euro2024

What a prison team those Italians have put together again. #Zoyeta

These Italians kick ass. I saw yellow and red cards in the group stage. #zwiita At the moment only a free kick has been awarded.
BTW..this is awesome

What is noteworthy is that the VAR technology does not consider Stephan El Shaarawy’s violation again. That was very close to red. #Zoyeta #Euro2024

Deserved progress for Switzerland. Playing good football and controlling the game. I think they can pull this off. Italy are still helpless, but they are still Italian.#zwiita #Switzerland #Italy #Euro2024

Switzerland play the way I would like to see the Netherlands. Great positional play. Bravery on the ball and lots of initiative off the ball. What this can lead to could be seen in the beautiful opening goal. Let's hope they continue that to get a deserved win. #zwiita
