The United States has relaxed its tough immigration policy for unaccompanied immigrant children, which dates back to the Trump era. Consequently, unaccompanied children will not be deported from the United States. Then it came in new guidelines from US health authorities.

The CDC, the US National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), said that “removal of unaccompanied children who are not citizens is not necessary to protect public health.” The change was announced shortly before the court order took effect. This order would allow President Joe Biden to deport unaccompanied children seeking asylum. The plan was introduced in March 20202 to curb the spread of Covid-19 and is still valid for adults and families traveling with children.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, testing and other preventive measures will allow children traveling alone to be “released” from their “sponsors” — usually their next of kin or other close relatives. The CDC also noted the recent nationwide decline in coronavirus cases and the increase in vaccination rates in both the United States and the countries of immigrant origin.

Immigrants have been deported more than 1.6 million times under the so-called Title 42 Act. Democrats and prominent activist groups have called for a complete end to Title 42 for all immigrants.
