United Airlines is accelerating its push toward premium international travel with the arrival of a newly configured Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner that significantly expands high-end seating and introduces a new business-class tier called Polaris Studio. The aircraft marks the debut of the airline’s long-haul “United Elevated” cabin concept and signals a strategic shift toward premium-focused international routes.
The Chicago-based carrier confirmed that the first aircraft has already been delivered and is expected to enter service in March 2026. Initial long-haul operations are planned from San Francisco International Airport to London Heathrow Airport and Singapore Changi Airport—two of United’s most important global business corridors.
The jet was delivered from Boeing’s Charleston manufacturing facility and routed through Washington Dulles International Airport before heading to Houston for testing and certification work ahead of commercial deployment.
A Dreamliner Rebalanced Toward Premium Travel
The new Boeing 787-9 is configured with a total of 222 seats, a layout that shifts the aircraft’s focus heavily toward premium passengers. The cabin includes 64 Polaris business-class seats—eight of which are the new Polaris Studio suites—along with 35 Premium Plus seats, 33 Economy Plus seats, and 90 standard economy seats.
Compared with United’s current Dreamliner configuration, the new layout adds 16 additional business-class seats and 14 more Premium Plus seats while reducing overall economy capacity. In total, the aircraft offers 99 premium seats, the highest share of premium seating among U.S. airlines.
United says all future 787 deliveries will include the Elevated interior as part of a broader fleet transformation strategy. The airline expects about 30 of these upgraded Dreamliners to be in service by 2027. At present, however, the company has not announced any retrofit plans for existing 787 aircraft already in its fleet.
Polaris Studio: A New Business-Plus Tier
The centerpiece of the new cabin is Polaris Studio, a premium-plus version of United’s Polaris business class positioned in the first row of each Polaris section. The aircraft features eight of these suites arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration.
Polaris Studio is designed to offer an elevated experience beyond standard business class. Travelers who book the suites receive additional services including access to United’s Global Reception check-in area, priority boarding privileges, and eligibility for luxury tarmac transfers at select airports.
Standard Polaris seats have also been redesigned. Each suite now includes sliding privacy doors, 19-inch 4K OLED entertainment screens, Bluetooth connectivity, wireless charging, and updated interior finishes. United has also configured some center suites to face each other for added privacy, while paired aisle-facing seats accommodate travelers flying together.
The upgrades are intended to strengthen United’s competitive position in the long-haul premium market, particularly on routes linking the United States with Europe and Asia.
Larger Premium Plus and Enhanced Economy Cabins
Beyond the business cabin, United has expanded its Premium Plus section to 35 seats in a 2-3-2 configuration, making it the largest Premium Plus cabin in the airline’s fleet.
The upgraded seats feature 16-inch 4K OLED entertainment displays, Bluetooth connectivity, wireless charging capabilities, and multiple power options. Passengers will also find privacy dividers with integrated reading lights, quartzite cocktail tables, and new soft-touch cabin materials designed to improve comfort on long flights.
Economy Plus and standard economy seating remain in a 3-3-3 configuration across 15 rows. However, the airline has upgraded the onboard experience with 13-inch 4K OLED seatback screens—the largest currently offered in economy cabins worldwide—along with Bluetooth audio support and redesigned seat cushions intended to provide better ergonomic support.
Each row will also feature six shared power outlets to improve device charging availability for passengers.
Starlink Connectivity and Updated Onboard Service
The Elevated 787-9 arrives factory-equipped with Starlink satellite internet, a system United plans to roll out across parts of its fleet. The service will offer free connectivity to MileagePlus members and is expected to deliver consistent coverage even on oceanic and polar routes where traditional satellite networks often struggle.
United is also introducing new onboard dining elements as part of the upgraded experience. Polaris Studio passengers will receive premium offerings such as Ossetra caviar amuse-bouche service and curated wine pairings designed to differentiate the product from standard business class.
Flight attendants are currently conducting ground service trials to refine service procedures before the aircraft begins commercial operations.
Delivery Timeline and Fleet Expansion
The first Elevated Dreamliner was delivered on February 27 from Boeing’s Charleston Delivery Center. After post-delivery work at Washington Dulles, the aircraft will undergo conformity testing at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, including a required mini-evacuation demonstration.
Once certification flights are completed, the jet will operate domestic proving flights before entering international service from San Francisco.
United also plans to showcase the Elevated cabin concept at a formal product event in Los Angeles on March 24, 2026.
Part of a Larger Dreamliner Strategy
The aircraft represents the first delivery from United’s massive Dreamliner order announced in December 2022, when the airline committed to purchasing 100 Boeing 787 aircraft—the largest order for the type in Boeing’s history.
Three additional Elevated 787-9 aircraft are expected to arrive in the coming weeks. By 2027, roughly 30 Dreamliners in United’s fleet will feature the new interior configuration, reinforcing United’s long-term strategy of emphasizing premium international travel.
