Unfriendly animals don't get enough attention.

Unfriendly animals don't get enough attention.

Brian Rodriguez, June 28, 2024

A new list of threatened species has been released. This year too, there is great interest in elephants, pandas and tigers. But there are many endangered animals that receive much less attention, such as some insects, reptiles and amphibians.

However, scientists say these animals are important, too. It goes like this: Nature is a bit like a monolithic tower. If there are only a few plant or animal species, you won’t notice it as much. But the tower becomes less stable. If too many species disappear, the entire tower could collapse.

Scientists are concerned about this.

Researchers have kept a list of about 163,000 species of plants and animals (163,000). Of these, more than 45,000 (45,300) are currently threatened with extinction. So more than a quarter.

New to the endangered species list are the Borneo elephant and the Gran Canaria giant lizard. Things are going very bad there. Fortunately, there is also some good news. The Iberian lynx in Europe is doing much better – it is no longer threatened.

Things are not going well for salamanders, toads and frogs in particular. While it is very important to nature.

I can't imagine a world without amphibians. Then there would be many harmful insects and many animals that would no longer be able to eat. That's not what we should want.

Biologist Manon de Visser

Do you have a garden and want to help amphibians? Which you can!

Animals love humid places with enough shade. For example, you can also create a pond with lots of plants. Just make sure not to put fish in it: these are natural enemies of many amphibians.
