What was long considered the northernmost island in the world is turning into an iceberg. Scientists from Denmark and Switzerland discovered this when they examined an island spotted in 2021 along with others north of Greenland. They discovered the water under the so-called islands. It turned out to be flat icebergs covered with earth and gravel, Danish scientist Rene Forsberg told the science website videnskab.dk and German news agency DPA.

According to Forsberg, all the islands in the area have now been visited since 1978, and none of them appear to be an actual island. Last year, a Swiss-Danish team thought they had discovered another 30 by 60-meter island north of Greenland. They named it Qeqertaq Avannarleq, which means “the northernmost island” in Greenland. It is located 800 meters north of Udaq Island, which until then was considered the closest land to the North Pole.
Researchers say that even more accurately it can not be called an island. According to them, another nearby island, Kaveklubin or Inuit Qigratat in Greenland, is actually the northernmost island on Earth.
