As the Netherlands enters uncharted territory under constitutional law, Professor Paul Bovind Ert (67) is retiring. Bad timing? 'No, it was nice. You have to be careful not to go on too long and start talking nonsense. I received articles from my former colleagues and thought: What is this about?
Bovend Ert was a professor of constitutional law at Radboud University for almost 25 years. He not only taught, but also participated visibly in social debate.
He will continue to do the latter. He regularly serves as a source of information for journalists and Pieter Omtzigt – Bovend Ert wrote two chapters in the NSC collection A New Perspective on Good Governance. But he doesn’t want to call himself one of the Netherlands’ constitutional consciences, he says from his spacious 1930s house in Nijmegen. He sees himself as simply a “constitutional law practitioner” with a warm heart for politics. And it is precisely at this intersection that he has been excited for months.
