Such a meeting gives the superpowers a chance to work on their strained relationship. That deteriorated dramatically under Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump. Countries have been involved in a trade war, shutting down each other’s consulates and arguing over the Chinese approach to the coronavirus.

Senior officials should meet in the city of Anchorage, midway between Washington and Beijing. An insider says US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and senior Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi are expected. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi may also join.

A US government official confirmed to Reuters news agency that a summit meeting was being discussed. He did not want to go into details, but said it should be done in the near future.

Minister Wang said last month that the United States and China could work together on some issues if they resolve their differences. He also called on the United States to stop “discrediting” the Chinese Communist Party and stop interfering in the country’s internal affairs.
