The United States is concerned about the security of nuclear power plants occupied by Russia

The United States accuses Russia of violating security measures at the seized nuclear facilities in Ukraine. Russian forces occupied, among other things, the old nuclear power plant at Chernobyl and also took control of the Zaporizhzhya power plant, the largest in Europe.

“We are following reports of damage to a research facility in Kharkov,” US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said on Twitter on Friday. “The short-term security risk is low, but Russia’s continued shooting at nuclear facilities must stop.”

The Americans say that they have no information about the restoration of power to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which exploded in 1986. According to the Ukrainian network operator, the power cables were damaged by the bombing.

On Thursday, Belarusian authorities said that specialists from this country will carry out repairs. A nuclear power plant, which has not generated electricity for years, can run for 48 hours on emergency generators. According to Granholm, more diesel could have been brought in.

“We remain concerned about the lack of data from security checkpoints in Chernobyl and Zaporizhzhya, which hampers the world’s ability to trace materials from those places,” the minister said. It is also said that the supply of spare parts and supplies to Zaporizhzhya has stopped and there are concerns about the condition of personnel at the power plants.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, about 210 technicians and security personnel have been working continuously at Chernobyl for nearly two weeks, because no changes could be made since Russia’s takeover of the facility.
