Microsoft’s next-generation Android phone, Surface Duo 2, is rumored to release on September 22 along with the successor to the Surface Pro 8, Surface Pro, Surface Go 3, Surface Book/Laptop, and other products. Before the rumors were released, the Surface Duo reached the FCC product certification database, we were told some details about it, for example, it was confirmed that it supports 5G technology and NFC.

It is very likely that the dual-screen device clearly mentioned in the FCC document is the Surface Duo 2 described as a “Microsoft mobile device”. For example, the document clearly states that the device supports “two forms”, one screen open, the other screen closed.

The FCC report also confirmed that this device is dual-screen with a front camera and another camera on the back. One of the documents also referred to the Android operating system.

In fact, there is a lane that the FCC has tested of the device in a variety of configurations, including fold open and fold closed, similar to previous testing on the original Surface Duo. As expected, the Surface Duo will support the major LTE and 5G frequency bands used in the US. The device will have 5G mmWave connectivity and Wi-Fi 6.

The 1995 model has two millimeter oriented antennas, both on the right half of the device. Unit 0 faces the back, while Unit 1 faces the front (screen). The position of the antenna is shown in the figure below, and the modes of these three devices have been evaluated in terms of power density.”

In addition, Microsoft is also testing NFC support.

    Surface Duo 2 features summary:

    Two 5.8 inch screens

    Qualcomm Snapdragon 888

8 GB memory, flash memory up to 256 GB

Front camera with 12 million pixels and rear camera module consisting of wide angle (12 million pixels), telephoto lenses (12 million pixels) and ultra-wide angle (16 million pixels)

Support 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, NFC, UWB and wireless charging

As we reported in February, the Surface Duo 2 will be Microsoft’s first Android phone to support 5G and NFC networks. This information is based on deleted job postings from Microsoft and other documents we have.

The second generation Surface Duo is powered by Snapdragon 888, which is much better than the original Snapdragon 855 chipset.

In addition to the new features, Microsoft is also planning to solve “serious software flaws”. If you remember, the Surface Duo has had major software issues so far that made the device seem less intelligent. The Surface Duo successor will solve all of these issues, and users can also look forward to faster feature updates.

Microsoft is adding more Android engineers to the Surface Duo team. In addition, there will be a new version of Microsoft Launcher, optimized for Surface Duo devices, so both new and old devices can expect fewer crashes and smooth transition effects.
