Peru's new president goes ahead with elections after violent protests |  Abroad

Bolorat, vice president under Castillo, is appointed as replacement until 2026, when Castillo’s term expires. Protesters believe that Boulwart should not simply take over Castillo’s term and demand new elections.

“I will send a motion to parliament to bring the election date forward to April 2024,” Boulwart announced on Sunday night to Monday television. She promised to submit the proposal this week.

One of Castillo’s last actions as president was to declare a state of emergency. It has not been reversed by Boluarte or Parliament, but it is unclear if it is still valid.
