The Thunderbird 115 “Supernova” free email client is here and has some exciting innovations in its bag. PCtipp has taken a closer look at the changes to open source mail software and offers practical advice.

Mozilla has introduced the new version of its open source email client Thunderbird. Version 115 with the promising name “Supernova” is not just an updated version, but a general overhaul of the email client. Thunderbird has been redesigned not only visually, but also technically.

“It lays a great, solid foundation for future releases that will make Thunderbird a much better email client — and we won't stop until it's the best option available,” Ryan Sipes, director of business and product development at Thunderbird, wrote on the Thunderbird blog (blog.thunderbird.net).
The new Thunderbird 115 “Supernova” is available for Linux, macOS and Windows at thunderbird.net/de. The most important innovations can be found below. This list does not claim to be complete.

Thunderbird developers have announced that over the next year, various additional improvements will be made to both existing Supernova features and entirely new features – including Thunderbird Sync. So we're excited to see what's next.

    New logo

In May 2023, Thunderbird received a new logo after 20 years. “Supernova comes with a new Thunderbird logo that honors our history and important connection to Mozilla, while embodying our brand revitalization and a promising, sustainable future,” the developers said in the blog. The design comes from John Hicks, who created the original Firefox and Thunderbird logos, Image 1.

    The menu structure is slimmer

In previous versions of Thunderbird, it was noticeable how heavily nested menus were. Sometimes you had to navigate from one menu through several submenus to the desired command. In Thunderbird, menus are simplified and arranged more logically. This also largely applies to ☰-menu Top right. For example, here you can find: opinion On the Toolbarswhere you can show the quick filter bar or turn off unwanted bars.

If you want to display a large amount of content in as little space as possible, you can find it directly in ☰-menu the density. This determines the amount of space Thunderbird displays between individual email messages and other objects. You can also adjust the font size for all controls with just a few clicks, Figure 2, and find the usual Settings item. Under ☰-Menu/DisplayThere is also an optional three-column view that displays the account or folder list, mail list, and mail content from left to right.

Thunderbird Supernova has a new logo-like logo for emails View map. It is a variation of the well-known vertical layout of a message list. According to Mozilla, “Show card Ideal for people accustomed to modern webmail,” Figure 3.
