Morocco wants to add US SeaGuardian drones to its military arsenal

Brian Rodriguez, May 6, 2024

Morocco is in negotiations with the United States regarding the purchase of four advanced SeaGuardian drones, which can be used in various maritime missions.

Spanish media reported this based on sources in the US State Department, which had already approved the deal.

SeaGuardian drones are manufactured by General Atomics Aeronautical and can stay in the air for more than 30 hours at an altitude of 50,000 feet. It can be equipped with bombs, missiles, radar, cameras and other sensors.

They can be used for humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, search and rescue, order maintenance, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, mine detection and targeting, among others.

The drones comply with NATO standards and can communicate with manned aircraft and safely share the same airspace. It is suitable for both defense and civil operations.

Negotiations between Morocco and the United States have been ongoing for more than three years, but the sale of drones has not yet been completed. The US Congress still has to approve the deal, but some senators want to limit the export of advanced drones.

SeaGuardian drones have already been sold to several NATO countries, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan and Israel.
