LONDON — UK leisure airline Jet2 is expanding its footprint in Greece with the addition of flights to Thassos for the Summer 2027 season, signaling continued confidence in strong British demand for Mediterranean travel. The new service, operating via Kavala International Airport, introduces UK travelers to one of Greece’s lesser-known island destinations while reinforcing Jet2’s broader strategy of network growth and diversification.

    New Route Targets Rising Demand

Jet2’s latest expansion comes as demand for Greek holidays continues to rise among UK consumers seeking a combination of affordability, natural beauty, and cultural experiences. The airline will offer up to four weekly flights to Kavala from Birmingham, Manchester, and London Stansted between May and October 2027, aligning with peak travel months.

Manchester will receive the highest frequency with two weekly departures, while Birmingham and London Stansted will each have one weekly service. Notably, the Stansted-to-Kavala route will be exclusive to Jet2, giving the airline a competitive edge in the UK leisure market.

Passengers traveling to Thassos will complete their journey with a short ferry transfer from Kavala, with onward ground transportation included as part of Jet2holidays packages. This integrated approach is designed to simplify logistics for travelers while maintaining convenience and value.

    Strengthening a Growing Greece Portfolio

The addition of Thassos increases Jet2’s Greece network to 16 airport gateways, reflecting a deliberate push to balance established tourist hotspots with emerging destinations. The airline has steadily expanded its offerings in Greece, capitalizing on the country’s enduring popularity among British holidaymakers.

Jet2’s strategy focuses on providing a broad mix of destinations that appeal to different segments of the market—from luxury travelers to budget-conscious families. By introducing less crowded locations like Thassos, the airline is responding to shifting consumer preferences toward more authentic and less commercialized travel experiences.

Industry analysts note that this move aligns with a wider trend in leisure aviation, where carriers are increasingly targeting secondary destinations to avoid congestion and differentiate their offerings.

    Thassos: An Emerging Alternative

Often referred to as the “Emerald Isle,” Thassos stands out for its relatively untouched landscape and slower pace of life. Located in the northern Aegean Sea, the island features dense pine forests, olive groves, and mountainous terrain shaped by a unique continental climate.

Unlike more heavily visited Greek islands such as Corfu or Kefalonia, Thassos has maintained a strong sense of authenticity. Tourism remains comparatively low, allowing visitors to experience traditional Greek culture more directly.

The island’s coastline is equally distinctive. Known historically for its high-quality white marble, Thassos boasts pale sandy beaches and striking turquoise waters. The lack of overdevelopment has helped preserve marine ecosystems, contributing to clear waters and abundant sea life.

    Cultural Appeal and Local Economy

Thassos offers more than scenic beaches. Mountain villages across the island provide insight into traditional livelihoods, including honey production, olive oil pressing, and goat cheese making. These practices remain part of everyday life rather than curated tourist attractions, enhancing the island’s appeal for experiential travelers.

Local hospitality also plays a key role. Visitors are often welcomed into a community-oriented environment where small businesses and family-run establishments dominate the tourism landscape.

    Affordable Travel and Accommodation

One of Thassos’s strongest selling points is its affordability. Compared to more established Greek destinations, accommodation prices remain significantly lower, making it an attractive option for travelers seeking value without compromising quality.

Jet2holidays will offer a range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly apartments to upscale resorts. Packages include return transfers, a 22kg baggage allowance, and customer support services, reinforcing Jet2’s reputation for transparent pricing and convenience.

This value-driven model has been central to the company’s growth, helping it maintain strong customer loyalty in a competitive market.

A Strategic Move in a Competitive Market

Jet2’s expansion into Thassos underscores a broader shift in the travel industry. As overcrowding becomes a concern in major tourist hubs, airlines and tour operators are increasingly investing in alternative destinations that offer similar appeal without the downsides of mass tourism.

By adding Thassos to its network, Jet2 is not only diversifying its route portfolio but also positioning itself to capture demand for more unique and authentic travel experiences.

With competition intensifying across the European leisure market, strategic route expansion remains a critical driver of growth. Jet2’s latest move highlights how airlines are adapting to evolving traveler preferences while continuing to strengthen their market position.
