IndiGo Captures Record 66.3% Market Share While Rivals Struggle With Operational Constraints

IndiGo strengthened its position as India’s dominant domestic airline in June 2026, capturing a record 66.3% share of the country’s domestic passenger market as operational disruptions and capacity reductions continued to weigh on Air India.

According to the latest figures released by India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the country’s largest airline carried nearly two out of every three domestic passengers during the month, widening the gap between itself and its competitors.

The latest market data highlights how fleet availability, aircraft deliveries and operational reliability have become key competitive advantages in India’s fast-growing aviation sector. While IndiGo expanded capacity and added flights across its domestic network, Air India and Air India Express were forced to trim operations, creating opportunities for rivals to absorb displaced passenger demand.

India’s domestic aviation market remained resilient overall despite capacity challenges, with passenger demand continuing to grow through the first half of the year.

IndiGo Reaches Highest Domestic Market Share on Record

    Capacity Expansion Drives Market Leadership

DGCA data showed IndiGo increased its domestic market share to 66.3% in June 2026, marking the airline’s highest share since records began.

The figure represents a notable increase from the 64.5% market share recorded during the same month in 2025, reinforcing IndiGo’s commanding lead in India’s airline industry.

By comparison, the combined market share of Air India and Air India Express fell to 23.9%, down significantly from 27.1% a year earlier.

The widening gap reflects sharply different operating strategies adopted by the country’s two largest airline groups.

While Air India reduced flying because of fleet constraints, IndiGo continued expanding its domestic schedule to meet strong travel demand. According to Mint, that expansion enabled the airline to carry a significantly larger share of passengers while competitors operated fewer services.

Air India’s Fleet Constraints Reduce Capacity

    Operational Challenges Affect Flight Schedules

DGCA statistics showed the Air India Group operated approximately 3,900 fewer domestic departures during April and May compared with the same period last year, representing a decline of roughly 7%.

IndiGo moved in the opposite direction by adding more than 13,000 domestic departures over the same period, increasing capacity by approximately 12% year over year.

Although June departure figures have not yet been released, passenger market share data already illustrates the impact of those differing capacity decisions.

Air India’s operational slowdown has been attributed to delayed aircraft deliveries, aircraft retrofit programs, maintenance requirements, fleet retirements and broader supply chain disruptions that limited aircraft availability.

Kotak Institutional Equities reported that Air India operated nearly 25% fewer flights across domestic and international networks during the first week of June compared with the previous year.

The brokerage also suggested that prolonged capacity reductions through fiscal years 2027 and 2028 could support stronger ticket pricing across the industry while allowing IndiGo to continue expanding its passenger base.

Air India Plans Capacity Recovery Later This Year

Air India expects its current operational challenges to ease in the coming months.

Chief Commercial Officer Nipun Aggarwal said on July 17 that the airline intends to restore capacity across most domestic and international routes beginning in September 2026 as aircraft availability improves.

Industry observers, however, believe regaining lost market share may take considerably longer.

Jainam Shah, Aviation Analyst at Equirus Securities, said delayed aircraft deliveries, fleet upgrades, retirements and supply chain issues reduced aircraft availability for Air India, allowing IndiGo to significantly strengthen its market position.

He added that although Air India plans to restore capacity from September, rebuilding its market share is expected to require additional time.

Amit Mittal, Director at Aerointellect Aviation, said the June market data reflects a growing divide within India’s airline industry.

According to him, passengers affected by Air India’s reduced capacity and SpiceJet’s operational difficulties largely shifted to IndiGo, further reinforcing the carrier’s market leadership.

Leadership Changes Coincide With Intensifying Competition

Both of India’s largest airline groups are also undergoing significant executive transitions.

IndiGo recently appointed former British Airways executive Willie Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer following the resignation of Pieter Elbers earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Air India is searching for a new chief executive after Campbell Wilson announced he will step down by September.

The leadership changes come as India’s aviation market becomes increasingly competitive amid ongoing fleet expansion and rising passenger demand.

Akasa Air Continues Growth While SpiceJet Faces Pressure

Akasa Air maintained its position as India’s third-largest domestic airline by increasing its market share to a record 6.4%.

The airline expanded operations by 16% during April and May, operating 1,356 additional domestic flights compared with the same period in 2025. Continued fleet additions have supported its steady network expansion.

SpiceJet, meanwhile, retained a domestic market share of just 1.9%, the lowest among India’s scheduled airlines.

Although the carrier added 195 domestic departures, equivalent to approximately 3% growth, legal disputes with aircraft lessors, grounded aircraft, fleet limitations and financial challenges continued to restrict its recovery.

    Operational Reliability Supports IndiGo’s Growth

Operational performance further strengthened IndiGo’s competitive position during June.

Among India’s ten busiest airports, the airline recorded an on-time performance (OTP) of 89.4%, ahead of the Air India Group at 85.9% and Akasa Air at 82.7%.

SpiceJet posted the weakest operational performance with an OTP of just 33.5%.

IndiGo also maintained one of the industry’s lowest cancellation rates at 0.2%, compared with 0.49% for the Air India Group. SpiceJet recorded the highest cancellation rate at 6.23%.

    Domestic Passenger Demand Remains Resilient

Despite capacity constraints affecting several airlines, domestic air travel in India continued to show steady growth.

DGCA data showed Indian airlines carried approximately 13.5 million domestic passengers during June 2026.

For the first six months of the year, total domestic passenger traffic reached 86.4 million, representing a 1.44% increase compared with the same period in 2025.

The figures indicate that passenger demand remains stable even as airline capacity varies, underscoring the continued strength of India’s domestic aviation market while highlighting IndiGo’s ability to capitalize on operational reliability and sustained network expansion.
