The Dutch women’s national team has reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 Handball World Cup. Against Norway, the most successful women’s country in the history of handball, the score was 23-29 in Trondheim.
The Norwegian women, former World Cup winners, immediately put the Dutch team under pressure. It was very difficult to get past Yara ten Holt, like the entire tournament. However, the score was 0-1 to Norway, thanks to Ingvild Bakkerud. The Netherlands were unfazed and made it 4-2, even with a goal from Ten Holt when Norway were awarded a penalty.
Norway is running out
The Norwegian players then showed how they have won many trophies in recent years. In a short time, the Netherlands scored 6 goals: 4-8. Before halftime the score was 7-12, which seemed like an impossibly large gap against the Norwegian women.
But the Norwegian team made a mistake during the substitution (there were too many women on the field) and received a time penalty. They lost their way. Holland returned and was allowed to rest at 11-12.

After the resumption of play, the Netherlands was able to keep up with the Norwegian handball queens for a while. However, after 14-14, another gap appeared: 14-16 and then 15-20. Dutch attacks always failed too quickly. Until he became 15-22.
With 10 minutes left in the match, the host team made a quick comeback. One goal, 2 in a row, 3 in a row… is it possible? But the Norwegian team trailed with its twenty-fifth goal, which was scored by Stein Skogrund after an attack over several checkers. It was 20-25.
Norway to the semi-finals
Dutch national team coach Per Johansson called a time-out two minutes before the end of the match. There is no point in the result, but the coach will of course use all available means. This did not upset Norway’s balance. In fact, they pushed the score to 23-29.
Places 5 to 8
The Netherlands can now still finish in fifth place. On Friday, the Dutch team will play in the semi-finals for places 5 to 8, with the Danish team losing to Montenegro.
