FRANKFURT — Discover Airlines, the leisure carrier within the Lufthansa Group, is preparing for a sweeping fleet expansion designed to strengthen its long-haul capabilities and elevate the passenger experience. The airline announced that it plans to grow its fleet to 40 aircraft by mid-2028, with the introduction of the state-of-the-art Airbus A350-900 beginning in 2027.

The move marks a pivotal chapter in the carrier’s evolution as it positions itself more competitively in the European leisure travel market. The A350-900, one of the most advanced wide-body aircraft available, is renowned for its fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and quieter operation—qualities that align closely with the Lufthansa Group’s sustainability objectives.

    Long-Haul Growth and Technological Upgrade

Discover Airlines’ expansion strategy centers on modernizing and harmonizing its long-haul fleet. By 2026, the airline expects to operate 16 Airbus A330-300 aircraft, up from its current total following the replacement of three aging A330-200s. This consolidation will help streamline operations and improve fuel economy while offering greater passenger comfort.

The introduction of the Airbus A350-900 in 2027 will serve as the next major step in that process. The carrier plans to integrate four A350s into its fleet, providing enhanced range and operational efficiency. Initially, the new aircraft could be deployed on existing routes such as Windhoek (WDH) in Namibia and Orlando (MCO) in the United States. With their extended range, however, the A350s will allow Discover Airlines to explore potential new destinations across South and Central America, southern Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Fleet uniformity remains a central element of Discover’s growth plan. A standardized aircraft lineup enables the carrier to optimize training, maintenance, and scheduling—key efficiencies for a growing leisure airline operating across multiple continents.

    Expanding the Short-Haul Network

While long-haul capacity forms the core of Discover’s expansion, the airline is also bolstering its short- and medium-haul network. Currently operating 16 Airbus A320 aircraft serving vacation destinations across Europe and North Africa, the airline plans to add two more in 2026 and another two by mid-2028. That will bring the A320 fleet to 20 aircraft, increasing flexibility and connectivity within the Lufthansa Group’s network.

This expansion will support Discover Airlines’ ability to link major European hubs with high-demand holiday destinations, enhancing travel options for passengers and boosting operational synergies with Lufthansa’s mainline and regional carriers.

    Upgraded Passenger Experience

Beyond the hardware expansion, Discover Airlines is investing in passenger comfort as part of its long-term vision. Starting in 2027, the airline will retrofit its Airbus A330 fleet with new-generation cabins across all three travel classes. The upgrades will include modern seating, advanced in-flight entertainment systems, and refreshed cabin design—part of a broader effort to deliver a “premium leisure travel” experience.

The upcoming Airbus A350-900s will extend that commitment further, offering improved cabin air quality, higher humidity levels, and quieter cabins for long-haul journeys. The aircraft’s advanced aerodynamics and composite materials also contribute to lower fuel burn and emissions, underscoring the Lufthansa Group’s ongoing sustainability initiatives.

    Leadership Perspective

Bernd Bauer, CEO of Discover Airlines, described the expansion as a transformative step for the airline’s future growth. “The integration of the Airbus A350 will allow Discover Airlines to provide even more comfort and attractive options for passengers,” Bauer said. He emphasized that the fleet additions would support the Lufthansa Group’s leadership in the leisure travel sector while meeting increasing demand for high-quality vacation travel.

Bauer noted that the additional aircraft and greater range will enable the airline to serve more destinations efficiently, aligning with the broader strategy of providing seamless, end-to-end travel experiences under the Lufthansa Group umbrella.

    Looking Ahead

With its incoming A350s and a refreshed A330 fleet, Discover Airlines is entering a new phase of modernization and expansion. The dual focus on fleet efficiency and passenger comfort reflects the airline’s ambition to compete aggressively in the leisure travel segment while advancing sustainability across operations.

By mid-2028, the carrier expects to operate 40 aircraft—a milestone that positions it firmly as one of Europe’s leading leisure airlines. As Discover Airlines prepares to introduce the A350-900, passengers can expect a quieter, greener, and more comfortable flying experience on both familiar and new long-haul routes.
