In the new documentary “The Story of Abdelkrim” on NTR, presenter Karim Amghar goes in search of his Berber roots. But a number of Dutch rural activists are unhappy with the documentary’s content.
The news website of Dutch rural Amazigh Ayo activist, Arif News, wrote that the first part of the three-part documentary was very confusing: Aref, Amazighs, Morocco, language, nationality, identity and other issues mixed in. Ayew also pointed out fundamental errors: the leader of the rural rebels Abd al-Karim al-Khattabi, who fought the Spanish in the 1920s, is said to have studied in the Spanish city of Salamanca, according to the documentary, but this is not true, he wrote. But Ayao’s criticisms are deeper, as the documentary notes that the late King Hassan II was racist towards the Rif, but this is not a state policy, while “Moroccan racist policy in the Rif” according to Ayao is structural. “Nasser Zefzafi and other activists in the movement were tortured, raped and sentenced to 20 years in prison for taking to the streets against Morocco’s racist policies in Aref,” Ayew said.
Presenter Karim Amgar said he is receiving hateful reactions and threats from the countryside corner. “This is an independent documentary. Do you have any criticism? No problem, express this respectfully,” he wrote on Twitter. Amgar said, “Wait for Episodes 2 and 3 before you judge. (…) Respect the directors who hold their necks. Express your comments with respect.”
