Biden: The United States will defend Taiwan if it attacks China | Abroad

The United States will defend Taiwan if that country is attacked by China. US President Joe Biden said during an interview with CNN that he feels “compelled” to do so.

The ruling shows that US policy is changing, with Washington in the past helping Taiwan build its defenses, but never explicitly pledging aid to the island.

Taiwan is considered a breakaway province by the communist regime in Beijing. Tensions between the two countries escalated sharply in the past month, in part because Chinese military aircraft have flown through Taiwan’s airspace for days on end.

According to Taiwan Defense Minister Chiu Kucheng, military tensions are at their worst level in more than 40 years.
