Influential Democrat Bernie Sanders has said he will do everything he can to help Joe Biden win a second term as US president. In recent weeks, more and more members of the party have called on Biden to step down.

In a column in The New York Times, Sanders, who sits in the Senate for Vermont, wrote that Biden is “the most effective president in modern history” and “the strongest candidate” to take on Donald Trump.

Sanders stresses in his article that he disagrees with Biden on many points, citing, for example, support for Israel and health care policy. However, he asks his fellow party members to stand united behind the president.

“Disastrous” TV debate.

According to the senator, Biden has been “put in front of the firing squad” repeatedly by Democrats and the media since his poor televised debate. In an interview with ABC, Biden previously responded to the criticism:

Biden continued to insist that he was the best candidate to take on Trump.

This week, Biden was repeatedly asked if he was still relevant during a press conference after the NATO summit in Washington. He made a mistake there, too. He declared President Zelensky to be Putin and called Vice President Harris “Vice President Trump.”

“Yes, I know that Mr. Biden is old, prone to blunders, walks stiffly, and had a disastrous debate with Mr. Trump,” wrote Sanders, who is 82 and a year older than Biden. Sanders acknowledges that this makes it difficult for Democrats to defend Biden. But unlike Republicans, they don’t have to explain why their candidate has “36 felony convictions,” he writes.

He also points to the Biden administration’s successes in economic areas, among other things. He warns that they are not enough to achieve victory. To do so, Biden must come up with plans that the American middle class can agree with. And Biden’s fellow party members must support that, rather than allow themselves to be distracted. If that happens, Sanders concludes, Biden will win in November.
