The current naming scheme for Ryzen mobile processors follows that of desktop CPUs, as first-generation Ryzen has been known since 2017. So far, the “Ryzen” branding has been followed by a product segment allocation (9, 7, 5 or 3) followed by a sequence A four-digit numeric plus any suffix. The four-digit number sequence contains generation in first place, assignment to performance category within the product segment second, and then model number within performance category within generation. The suffix (H, HX, HS or U) also provides information about the consumption class of laptop CPUs. The model numbers derived from the naming scheme do not provide any information about the CPU architecture or the iGPU infrastructure, for example.

Among other things, this is exactly what the new naming scheme that AMD wants to introduce with the Ryzen 7000 Mobile in 2023 is supposed to change. However, the new scheme is not as simple as AMD wanted to make it believe in Austin with the help of a turntable, as the published slides explain later in more detail. Because the product segment that was previously behind “Ryzen” does not change to second place without replacement, nor does it find itself there 1:1. Instead, there are two different numbers in the second position of each segment (Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7, Ryzen 9), only for Athlon Silver and Athlon Gold there is only one number for each. With Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9, there is an overlap with “x8xx”. The third digit in turn provides clear information about the core CPU architecture.

Unchanged, the first number provides information about the generation (AMD equates it with certain model years in the example) and the fourth number about the performance class within the segment, where it appears that there is only a ‘0’ for the ‘bottom’ and a ‘5’ for the top. This information was second to none and was more recognizable.

The suffix includes the familiar abbreviations HX, HS, H, U, and C. Apparently the new “e” is for CPUs with a TDP of just 9W, which will still be located below the U series.


The acceptance of architecture is not without reason

With the build included in the model number, AMD will handle so-called “updates” more transparently in the future, even if only enthusiasts likely know anything about the product’s naming background. The chipsets published by AMD in the new sketch show that the Ryzen 7000 Mobile series will also have CPUs with Zen 2 architecture, while Zen 4 processors are at the top end.

For now only for Ryzen for laptops

According to AMD, the new system will initially be offered only in the mobile segment, and previous models will not be renamed retroactively. Desktop wizards should stay with the old system for now.

With the inclusion of the chassis in the model’s naming, the new naming scheme makes a modification that will undoubtedly be of interest to enthusiasts. The fact that there is ‘only’ a segment assignment within the TDP class and thus assignment to one of the two performance classes makes the new scheme seem somewhat more significant at first glance. But the mere fact that there are chipsets with performance classes with different levels of TDP and that these appear clear on paper, but can be designed completely differently by OEMs in the laptop, shows that the new scheme will not completely overwhelm customers. The performance of the processor in the system is under consideration, especially since the statement about the relevant iGPU in the processor is completely missing.
