Widebody Aircraft Purchase Aims to Boost International Growth and Strengthen Shanghai’s Global Aviation Hub
Airline Plans Long-Haul Expansion with New Airbus Fleet Deliveries Through 2033
SHANGHAI — China Eastern Airlines has announced plans to acquire 25 Airbus A330neo widebody aircraft in a deal valued at approximately US$9.35 billion at catalogue prices, marking a significant step in the carrier’s long-term strategy to expand international operations and strengthen Shanghai’s position as a major global aviation hub.
The aircraft will be delivered in phases between 2029 and 2033 under a purchase agreement signed with Airbus in Shanghai. China Eastern said the new aircraft will primarily be deployed from Shanghai Pudong International Airport, where they will support the airline’s growing long-haul network and increase connectivity between China and international destinations.
According to a filing submitted to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the transaction’s final value will be lower than the published catalogue price after the airline secured commercial discounts from Airbus. The catalogue valuation is based on Airbus’ January 2025 list prices.
New Aircraft to Support International Network Growth
China Eastern said the purchase is intended to strengthen its widebody fleet as international travel demand continues to recover and expand. The airline plans to use the A330neo aircraft to increase capacity on existing long-haul routes while also supporting the launch of additional international services.
The carrier expects the aircraft to play a central role in enhancing Shanghai Pudong International Airport’s status as a transfer hub by improving connections between domestic Chinese cities and overseas markets.
The latest agreement reflects China Eastern’s broader efforts to position itself for long-term growth in international aviation. Chinese airlines have increasingly focused on rebuilding and expanding overseas networks as global travel demand continues to recover following disruptions experienced earlier in the decade.
Follows Earlier Airbus Narrowbody Order
The widebody aircraft purchase comes only months after China Eastern signed a separate agreement in March to acquire 101 Airbus A320neo aircraft. That transaction carried a catalogue value of approximately US$15.8 billion and represented one of the airline’s largest recent fleet investments.
Together, the two agreements underscore China Eastern’s commitment to modernizing and expanding its fleet across both short-haul and long-haul operations.
The latest order also highlights Airbus’ continued efforts to strengthen its presence in China, one of the world’s most important aviation markets. Industry observers have closely monitored discussions between Airbus and Chinese airlines in recent years amid reports of potential large-scale aircraft purchases.
According to Reuters, Airbus has engaged in intermittent negotiations aimed at securing a potential aircraft order of up to 500 jets in China. Such agreements are often associated with high-level diplomatic engagements, although no major aircraft deal was announced during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to China in December.
Airbus forecasts that passenger traffic in China will grow by approximately 5% annually over the next two decades, creating sustained demand for new commercial aircraft and fleet modernization programs.
A330neo Designed for Improved Efficiency
The Airbus A330neo is the newest generation of the A330 family and incorporates several technological improvements intended to reduce operating costs and improve performance.
The aircraft features high-aspect-ratio wings, enhanced aerodynamic design, and Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines. These upgrades provide greater fuel efficiency and operational performance compared with earlier versions of the A330.
China Eastern said part of the new order will replace aging aircraft currently in service. The airline expects at least 10 older Airbus A330 aircraft to retire due to age during the delivery period.
As a result, some of the incoming aircraft will serve as replacements, while the remaining jets will contribute to the expansion of the airline’s long-haul fleet capacity.
Multiple Financing Sources Planned
China Eastern said it intends to finance the acquisition through a combination of internal funds, bank financing, bond issuances, and other financing mechanisms.
The airline noted that the staged payment structure associated with the aircraft deliveries is not expected to create a material impact on cash flow or affect day-to-day operations.
In a separate regulatory filing, China Eastern disclosed plans for one of its offshore subsidiaries to issue overseas bonds worth up to 2.8 billion yuan, equivalent to approximately US$411.89 million.
The company did not provide details regarding the intended use of proceeds from the proposed bond issuance.
Strategic Investment in Long-Term Growth
The Airbus A330neo order represents one of China Eastern’s most significant recent investments in long-haul aviation and signals confidence in the continued expansion of international air travel. By combining fleet modernization with network growth, the airline aims to strengthen its competitive position while enhancing Shanghai’s role as a leading gateway for global air transportation.
As deliveries begin later this decade, the new aircraft are expected to become a key component of China Eastern’s international expansion strategy, supporting both higher passenger volumes and improved operational efficiency across its long-haul network.
