Premium Lounge Upgrade to Replace Long-Standing Basement Facility at Melbourne Airport

Singapore Airlines will open its new SilverKris Lounge at Melbourne Airport in September 2026, bringing forward the launch of the carrier’s upgraded premium facility by several months as part of its ongoing international lounge investment program.

The Singapore-based airline had previously indicated the Melbourne project would likely be completed in late 2026 or early 2027. However, the revised timeline confirms the new lounge will begin welcoming eligible passengers significantly earlier than expected.

The upcoming facility will replace Singapore Airlines’ existing basement lounge in Melbourne Airport’s Terminal 2 international precinct, a space that has long drawn criticism from travelers for its lack of natural light and limited layout.

The new SilverKris Lounge is expected to deliver a substantially improved ground experience for premium passengers traveling through Melbourne, featuring more space, upgraded dining, enhanced work areas, and direct views of the airport apron.

New Location Marks Major Shift for Melbourne Operations

Unlike previous renovation projects, the Melbourne initiative represents a complete relocation of the airline’s lounge operations rather than a refurbishment of the current site.

The new lounge will be located on Level 2 above Gates 11 and 15 within Melbourne Airport’s international terminal. The area was previously occupied by the Aspire Lounge, which had earlier operated as The House and originally served as Etihad Airways’ premium lounge facility.

The location places Singapore Airlines directly opposite the Emirates Lounge, one of the airport’s most prominent premium passenger spaces known for its open design and natural lighting.

For more than a decade, Singapore Airlines passengers in Melbourne have used a basement lounge with no external windows, a facility that last underwent major refurbishment in 2013. The current lounge became widely known among frequent flyers for its confined layout and dated appearance.

Its reputation became so notable that Singapore Airlines Vice President of Lounge Development, Timothy Chua, previously described the facility as the network’s “ugly duckling.”

Larger Lounge to Feature Natural Light and Apron Views

One of the most significant changes in the new Melbourne SilverKris Lounge will be the introduction of natural light throughout the facility.

According to early design renders, the new lounge will feature windows along two sides of the space, offering panoramic views of aircraft operations and the airport apron — a dramatic contrast to the airline’s existing underground facility.

At approximately 750 square meters, the new lounge will also provide roughly 30% more floor space than the current location. The larger footprint is expected to improve passenger flow, increase seating capacity, and ease congestion during peak departure periods.

The expanded layout will include multiple seating zones designed for both relaxation and productivity, along with dedicated work pods for passengers needing a quieter environment before departure.

Design Inspired by Recent International Lounge Projects

Singapore Airlines said the Melbourne lounge will reflect the airline’s latest international lounge design standards, following concepts recently introduced in Perth and London Heathrow.

The design will incorporate several signature features already seen in newer Singapore Airlines lounges, including a batik-inspired entrance wall, marble finishes, timber detailing, and high-backed wing chairs positioned throughout the facility.

The project was developed in partnership with Singapore-based design firm ONG&ONG, while Australian architectural firm MODE produced the visual renderings.

The airline’s focus on premium finishes and functional layouts reflects a broader strategy to modernize its global lounge network and create a more consistent customer experience across major international markets.

    Enhanced Dining and Beverage Options

Singapore Airlines will also significantly upgrade its food and beverage offerings in Melbourne.

The new SilverKris Lounge will include live cooking stations and a fully attended bar, features modeled after the dining concept introduced at the airline’s Perth lounge.

The expanded dining zones are intended to provide a more premium pre-flight experience while reducing crowding during busy travel periods.

Dedicated First Class Area to Continue

The Melbourne lounge will continue to feature a dedicated First Class section for eligible premium travelers.

Access will be available to Star Alliance First Class passengers and Solitaire PPS Club members traveling on Singapore Airlines-operated flights.

The timing of the upgrade is particularly important for Melbourne operations, as Singapore Airlines continues to deploy the Airbus A380 on services SQ237 and SQ228 throughout the year. Those flights carry higher numbers of Suites, First Class, and Business Class passengers compared with other aircraft types.

The upgraded lounge is expected to provide those travelers with a significantly enhanced pre-departure experience.

    Lounge Access Eligibility

The Business Class section of the Melbourne SilverKris Lounge will be accessible to eligible passengers flying on Singapore Airlines and Star Alliance-operated services.

Singapore Airlines also confirmed that Virgin Australia Velocity Platinum and Gold members traveling on Singapore Airlines-operated flights will continue to receive lounge access privileges, including guest access allowances.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Gold members traveling on Singapore Airlines-operated flights will also remain eligible for entry.

Eligible guests must travel on the same Singapore Airlines flight.

    Broader Global Lounge Investment Continues

The Melbourne redevelopment forms part of Singapore Airlines’ wider investment strategy across its international lounge network.

Recent projects have included major upgrades in Perth and London Heathrow, improvements in Sydney, and large-scale redevelopment work at Singapore Changi Airport.

The airline recently introduced a new First Class SilverKris Lounge at Changi Terminal 2 while continuing phased renovations of the terminal’s Business Class lounge facilities.

These investments follow the extensive Terminal 3 lounge redevelopment completed in 2022, which included enhancements to The Private Room experience for the airline’s highest-tier premium passengers.

Once the Melbourne project is completed, Taipei is expected to remain among the few overseas locations still operating an older-generation SilverKris Lounge design.

    Bottom Line

Singapore Airlines’ decision to open its new Melbourne SilverKris Lounge in September 2026 marks one of the most significant international lounge upgrades in the carrier’s network in recent years.

The relocation replaces the airline’s long-standing basement facility with a brighter, larger, and more modern premium space featuring natural light, upgraded dining experiences, dedicated productivity areas, and enhanced seating options.

With approximately 30% more space and a prime location above Gates 11 and 15 at Melbourne Airport, the new lounge is expected to substantially improve the travel experience for Singapore Airlines’ premium passengers flying through one of Australia’s busiest international gateways.
