Immigration Staffing Expanded as Global Fans Travel to South Korea for Busan Event
South Korean immigration authorities are ramping up operations at Incheon International Airport ahead of BTS’s highly anticipated two-day concert in Busan, as officials prepare for a sharp increase in international travelers entering the country.
Incheon International Airport (ICN), South Korea’s largest international gateway, expects approximately 48,660 foreign arrivals on Thursday alone, according to immigration authorities. The projected total marks a 15% increase from the same period one week earlier, underscoring the significant tourism impact generated by the globally recognized K-pop group.
The concert, scheduled to begin Friday in Busan, is expected to attract tens of thousands of international fans from across Asia and other regions, prompting authorities to introduce expanded staffing and additional crowd-management measures to maintain smooth passenger processing during the travel surge.
Incheon Airport Expands Immigration Operations
To accommodate the elevated passenger volume, the Incheon Airport Immigration Office said it has increased staffing levels for four consecutive days beginning Wednesday. Authorities confirmed that the number of officers on duty will rise by as much as 88% during the peak operating period.
The office, which manages entry and departure procedures for foreign nationals using the airport, is also deploying additional supervisory personnel and passenger guidance staff throughout immigration inspection halls.
Officials said the measures are intended to reduce congestion and minimize delays as travelers move through immigration checkpoints.
“An immigration official said authorities remain highly vigilant regarding the anticipated influx of international visitors and are working to minimize waiting times throughout the airport.”
In addition to increasing manpower, immigration authorities are conducting advanced monitoring of inbound international flights to better anticipate peak arrival periods.
By reviewing arrival schedules and passenger volumes in advance, officials aim to allocate staffing resources more efficiently and prevent operational bottlenecks during high-traffic hours.
BTS Continues to Drive Tourism Demand
The expected influx of visitors highlights BTS’s continued influence on South Korea’s tourism sector and broader travel economy. Large-scale concerts featuring internationally recognized artists frequently produce spikes in inbound travel demand, particularly from neighboring Asian markets.
Previous BTS performances have demonstrated the group’s ability to generate substantial increases in foreign visitor traffic.
During concerts held in April, the number of foreign nationals entering South Korea through Incheon International Airport rose 26% above the daily average of roughly 38,000 foreign arrivals recorded in May, according to a report by Korea Times.
Chinese travelers represented the largest share of international visitors during that period. Authorities also observed notable increases in arrivals from Japan, Taiwan, and several Southeast Asian countries in the days leading up to the concerts.
The latest event is expected to produce a similar trend as international fans travel to Busan for the performances.
Busan Concert Expected to Boost Regional Travel Activity
Although some overseas visitors are expected to arrive directly through Gimhae International Airport (PUS), which serves the Busan metropolitan region, many international travelers are continuing to enter South Korea through Incheon International Airport.
Industry observers note that Incheon remains the preferred gateway for many long-haul and regional travelers because of its extensive international route network, larger passenger capacity, and broader airline connectivity.
The increased travel demand surrounding the BTS concerts reflects the growing role of entertainment-driven tourism in Asia’s aviation and hospitality sectors. South Korean authorities have increasingly relied on coordinated airport operations and advanced passenger-flow management during major cultural events that attract international audiences.
Airport and immigration officials said enhanced staffing levels and real-time operational monitoring are expected to help maintain efficient passenger processing throughout the concert weekend despite the elevated traffic volumes.
