Carrier deploys additional Boeing 777-300ER service as demand for premium travel strengthens
Singapore Airlines is set to significantly expand premium cabin capacity on its Singapore-to-Auckland route during the northern winter 2026/27 season, introducing up to 10 daily First Class and Suites seats between the two cities as demand for long-haul premium travel continues to recover.
The airline will deploy a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft on flights SQ281/282 from late October 2026 through March 2027, replacing the Airbus A350 Long Haul currently assigned to the service. The aircraft swap effectively doubles First Class inventory on the route for part of the season and marks the highest premium-seat availability between Singapore and Auckland in at least six years.
The increase comes as Air New Zealand also boosts services between the two countries, further intensifying competition and capacity in the premium travel segment.
Two-Phase Schedule Expansion
Singapore Airlines’ expanded Auckland schedule will operate in two phases during the northern winter season.
From Oct. 25, 2026, through Jan. 16, 2027, the airline will offer eight First Class seats daily through two Boeing 777-300ER rotations. From Jan. 17 through March 27, 2027, the premium offering rises to 10 daily seats as the carrier combines one Boeing 777-300ER service with one Airbus A380 operation.
The third daily Auckland rotation will continue using the Airbus A350 Long Haul aircraft, which does not include a First Class cabin. The A350 fleet is expected to receive updated Business Class seating and Starlink Wi-Fi connectivity beginning in 2027, according to Mainly Miles.
Major Increase From Prior Winter Season
The largest operational change involves flights SQ281/282, which will shift from the Airbus A350 Long Haul to the Boeing 777-300ER.
During the 2025/26 northern winter season, Singapore Airlines limited First Class availability to a single daily service, SQ285/286. That schedule offered four First Class seats during the early part of the season before increasing to six Suites seats from mid-January onward.
Under the revised 2026/27 schedule, SQ285/286 remains in operation while SQ281/282 gains the upgraded Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, substantially increasing premium inventory for travelers flying between Singapore and New Zealand.
The aircraft upgrade also increases Business Class seating from 42 to 48 seats and Premium Economy capacity from 24 to 28 seats. Economy Class capacity will decline slightly from 187 to 184 seats.
Boeing 777-300ER Features 2013 First Class Product
Singapore Airlines’ Boeing 777-300ER fleet is equipped with the carrier’s 2013 First Class product, configured in a single-row cabin with four seats arranged in a 1-2-1 layout.
The design includes a large space behind the center seats that allows cabin crew to move discreetly between aisles. Following the retirement of the airline’s older 2006-generation First Class seats on non-ER Boeing 777-300 aircraft, the 2013 product remains the carrier’s primary First Class offering outside of its Airbus A380 Suites cabin.
Airbus A380 Suites Return in January 2027
The Airbus A380 will return to the Auckland route on SQ285/286 from mid-January through late March 2027.
The aircraft features Singapore Airlines’ 2017 Suites product, which includes six private suites and double-bed configurations designed for couples traveling together.
The return of the A380 further strengthens the carrier’s premium positioning on the route during the peak southern hemisphere summer travel period.
KrisFlyer Award Availability Expands
The increase in premium capacity has also opened additional award availability for members of the airline’s KrisFlyer loyalty program.
Saver award seats are already available on selected dates for both directions, particularly on the upgraded SQ281/282 services.
Current one-way KrisFlyer Saver redemption rates between Singapore and Auckland are 29,000 miles for Economy, 53,500 miles for Premium Economy, 72,000 miles for Business Class, and 98,000 miles for First Class or Suites.
Taxes and fees are typically about S$109 departing Singapore and approximately S$48 departing Auckland, with New Zealand’s tourism levy applying to inbound travelers.
Wider New Zealand Expansion Continues
Singapore Airlines is also increasing service to Christchurch during the same winter season.
The carrier plans to operate 10 weekly flights to Christchurch, rising to 12 weekly flights during peak travel periods. That compares with seven and 11 weekly flights, respectively, during the prior year.
Meanwhile, Air New Zealand is resuming Singapore-Christchurch service, complementing the joint-venture operations both airlines already maintain on the Auckland route.
Despite the Auckland expansion, Singapore Airlines continues to reduce its overall Boeing 777-300ER fleet, with one aircraft expected to leave the fleet by the end of March 2027.
Alongside Auckland, Amsterdam is also scheduled to receive additional Boeing 777-300ER deployment beginning in July 2026, while other routes transition to Airbus A350 Long Haul operations.
First Class to Remain Year-Round
Beginning in April 2027, Singapore Airlines will scale Auckland operations back to a single daily Boeing 777-300ER service on SQ285/286, aligning with the carrier’s current northern summer schedule.
However, unlike the temporary Airbus A350 downgrade implemented in April 2026, the airline plans to maintain year-round First Class service on the Auckland route going forward.
Air New Zealand is expected to operate two daily services during the northern summer season to balance overall market capacity between Singapore and New Zealand.
