Emirates Expands Premium Economy Strategy With Refitted Airbus A380

DUBAI — Emirates has completed the first retrofit and reconfiguration of one of its two-class Airbus A380 aircraft, introducing a new three-class cabin layout as part of the carrier’s broader multibillion-dollar fleet modernization initiative.

The upgraded aircraft, registered A6-EUX, has already entered commercial service, operating flights between Dubai International Airport and Birmingham Airport.

The refurbishment marks the first time Emirates has installed its Premium Economy product on a former two-class Airbus A380, reflecting the airline’s ongoing push to standardize premium offerings across its long-haul fleet amid sustained demand for upgraded travel experiences.

Emirates Advances Large-Scale Fleet Retrofit Program

Emirates said A6-EUX is the first of 15 two-class Airbus A380 aircraft scheduled for a full interior renovation under the program. The work is being carried out entirely by Emirates Engineering in Dubai, which has already retrofitted 95 aircraft, including 42 Airbus A380s and 53 Boeing 777 aircraft.

The airline originally launched the retrofit initiative in 2021 with plans to refurbish 120 aircraft. However, Emirates later expanded the scope of the project to 219 aircraft by late 2024 after strong passenger demand and favorable customer feedback.

According to Emirates President Sir Tim Clark, the retrofit strategy is designed to deliver a more consistent premium travel experience across the carrier’s global network.

He noted that the redesign of the airline’s two-class Airbus A380 fleet also highlights Emirates’ growing engineering and aircraft modification capabilities.

The refurbished aircraft now includes 76 Business Class seats, 56 Premium Economy seats, and 437 Economy Class seats.

Emirates also introduced updated cabin interiors throughout the aircraft, including redesigned carpets, refreshed ceiling panels, premium wood finishes, and decorative cabin motifs inspired by the Ghaf tree, the national tree of the United Arab Emirates.

Premium Economy Becomes Central to Emirates Growth Strategy

One of the most significant changes in the retrofit involves the addition of Emirates’ Premium Economy cabin on the upper deck of the Airbus A380. Previously, the airline’s two-class aircraft did not include the intermediate cabin category.

The new Premium Economy section features a 2-3-2 seating layout equipped with leather seats, adjustable headrests, built-in charging ports, leg rests, and 13.3-inch in-flight entertainment screens.

The expansion comes as airlines worldwide continue to see rising demand for premium leisure travel and mid-tier luxury products that bridge the gap between Economy and Business Class.

To accommodate the new layout, Emirates Engineering removed 120 Economy Class seats from the upper deck while adding 18 additional Business Class seats. Engineers also repositioned galley units, storage sections, partitions, overhead bins, and several onboard systems during the refurbishment process.

The retrofit of the first aircraft required approximately 35,000 man-hours and involved around 50 engineers and technicians. Emirates said future aircraft modifications are expected to take approximately 30 days as teams apply operational lessons learned from the initial project.

Emirates Pushes Ahead With Fleet Modernization and Sustainability Goals

The Emirates retrofit initiative is considered one of the aviation industry’s largest in-house fleet upgrade programs, underscoring the airline’s long-term investment in maintaining product competitiveness while extending the operational life of its widebody fleet.

The carrier currently refurbishes roughly two aircraft each month through its engineering facilities in Dubai.

Alongside cabin upgrades, Emirates has also expanded sustainability efforts tied to the retrofit program by repurposing materials removed from aircraft interiors.

The airline has transformed retired cabin materials into products such as “Aircrafted” luggage collections and backpacks donated to children in 10 countries.

By the end of 2026, Emirates expects all 15 of its two-class Airbus A380 aircraft to complete the retrofit process, further aligning cabin products and premium offerings across its international network.
