Airline Adds Five-Weekly Zurich Route to India’s Technology Capital

Swiss International Air Lines will launch a new long-haul route connecting Zurich and Bengaluru during the 2026/27 winter schedule, expanding its footprint in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.

The new five-times-weekly service marks SWISS’s first direct connection to Southern India and makes Bengaluru the airline’s third Indian destination after Delhi and Mumbai. The carrier said the move reflects growing demand for business and leisure travel between Europe and India’s leading technology hub.

The Zurich-based airline will operate the Bengaluru route as part of a broader winter network that includes 88 destinations worldwide from its Zurich and Geneva hubs. SWISS is also accelerating deployment of its Airbus A350 fleet on key long-haul services, including Johannesburg and Shanghai.

Bengaluru Route Targets Business and Technology Travel Demand

Bengaluru, formerly known as Bangalore, has become a major destination for global technology companies, startups, and multinational firms. The city is widely recognized as India’s “Silicon Valley” because of its concentration of software, engineering, and innovation businesses.

SWISS said the new route is designed to strengthen connectivity between Europe and Southern India’s growing technology sector.

SWISS CEO Jens Fehlinger said the airline sees strong potential in the market.

“He noted that India’s technology capital appeals to both leisure and business travelers and serves as a strong gateway for exploring Southern India.”

Fehlinger also said the service is intended to address increasing demand for direct corporate travel connections between Switzerland and Bengaluru’s business community.

Under the planned schedule, eastbound Flight LX 140 will depart Zurich at 13:20 five days a week, excluding Mondays and Wednesdays, arriving in Bengaluru at 02:55 the following day. Westbound Flight LX 141 will depart Bengaluru at 04:50, except Tuesdays and Thursdays, and arrive in Zurich at 10:50 local time.

Airbus A350 Expansion Supports Premium Cabin Strategy

The Bengaluru launch comes as SWISS expands its Airbus A350 operations across its long-haul network. The airline expects to operate five A350 aircraft by the end of the year as part of its broader fleet modernization program.

The A350 rollout supports the airline’s “SWISS Senses” cabin concept, which includes upgraded seating, redesigned interiors, and enhanced inflight amenities across all travel classes.

After previously assigning the aircraft to Boston and Seoul routes, SWISS confirmed that Johannesburg services will transition to the A350 during the upcoming winter season. Shanghai flights from Zurich will also begin receiving A350 aircraft starting in September.

The carrier said the aircraft deployment is aimed at improving passenger comfort while increasing operational efficiency on long-haul routes.

Geneva Network Adjustments Reflect Fleet Constraints

While expanding in India and Asia, SWISS is also reshaping parts of its European network from Geneva.

The airline confirmed it will discontinue Geneva services to Berlin, Hamburg, and Pristina during the winter schedule period. The cuts were linked to ongoing shortages of aircraft and engine components affecting the Airbus A220 fleet.

SWISS said the reductions are intended to improve operational stability and optimize fleet planning during a period of limited global aircraft availability.

Despite the adjustments, the airline will continue operating 15 short-haul routes from Geneva alongside its New York long-haul service. From Zurich, SWISS plans to serve 60 European destinations and 24 intercontinental markets during the winter season.

The 2026/27 winter schedule will run from Oct. 25, 2026, through March 27, 2027.

The launch of the SWISS route also highlights Bengaluru’s growing appeal as a tourism and cultural destination. The Karnataka capital combines a major technology economy with parks, historic landmarks, culinary attractions, and expanding infrastructure.

Kempegowda International Airport serves as the city’s primary aviation gateway and handles both domestic and international operations through two terminals. The city is also connected to major Indian markets through rail and road networks, while local transportation includes metro rail, buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws.

Popular tourist attractions include Bangalore Palace, Cubbon Park, Lalbagh Botanical Garden, Bannerghatta National Park, and Tipu Sultan’s Palace. Bengaluru is also known for its diverse food scene, shopping districts, and annual cultural festivals such as Kadalekai Parishe and the Karaga Festival.

Tourism officials and airlines alike increasingly view Bengaluru as a dual-purpose destination capable of attracting both corporate travelers and international tourists seeking access to Southern India.
