Airline Expands Capacity on Key Corporate Travel Corridor
SEOUL — Korean Air will restore daily nonstop flights between Seoul and Jakarta beginning in June, marking a significant expansion on one of Southeast Asia’s most important business travel routes as competition among South Korean carriers intensifies following regulatory changes tied to the airline’s merger with Asiana Airlines.
The carrier said it will increase services between Incheon International Airport and Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to seven weekly flights after passenger demand on the route rose during the first quarter of 2026.
The decision comes as airlines reposition themselves in Indonesia’s growing aviation market after regulators required Korean Air to redistribute part of its traffic rights and airport slots as a condition of its merger with Asiana Airlines.
Korean Air had previously reduced Seoul–Jakarta operations to twice-weekly service after transferring some Indonesia-related traffic rights and slots to low-cost carrier T’way Air earlier this year.
The changes formed part of antitrust remedies designed to prevent excessive market concentration on major international routes following the merger between Korea’s two largest full-service airlines.
Jakarta Seen as a High-Value Market for Korean Carriers
Industry analysts view Jakarta as one of Korean Air’s most strategically important Southeast Asian destinations because of steady demand from South Korean corporations operating in Indonesia, along with strong flows of expatriate and business travelers.
Korean Air plans to operate the route daily starting next month under a revised schedule that departs Seoul at 7:40 p.m. and arrives in Jakarta at 12:45 a.m. local time the following day. Return flights will leave Jakarta at 2:15 a.m. and arrive in Seoul at 11:30 a.m.
Although the overnight timing is considered less attractive for premium corporate travelers, aviation analysts said the airline appears focused on preserving market share and maintaining a long-term presence in Indonesia despite less favorable slot allocations.
Korean Air said updated bilateral aviation agreements between South Korea and Indonesia provided greater flexibility for codeshare arrangements and route expansion. Airline officials also confirmed they secured additional airport slots necessary to restore the daily schedule.
Competition on Seoul-Jakarta Route Intensifies
The Seoul-Jakarta corridor has become increasingly competitive as South Korean regulators attempt to preserve airline competition following the Korean Air-Asiana consolidation.
Authorities previously expressed concern that the merger could reduce consumer choice and lead to higher fares if international capacity remained concentrated under a single airline group.
Currently, T’way Air operates the route five times weekly, while Asiana Airlines continues to provide daily service between the two capitals. Korean Air’s expansion will further increase available seat capacity and offer travelers additional scheduling options.
Industry experts said Korean Air’s willingness to restore full service despite losing some prime-time airport slots underscores the importance of the Indonesian market within its broader Southeast Asia strategy.
Airlines across the Asia-Pacific region have increasingly targeted Jakarta as economic ties between Indonesia and regional trading partners continue to strengthen. South Korean companies maintain substantial investments in Indonesian manufacturing, infrastructure, energy, and technology sectors, contributing to steady premium travel demand.
Passenger Traffic Continues to Climb
According to South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport aviation portal, passenger traffic on the Incheon-Jakarta route reached 121,642 travelers during the first quarter of 2026, representing a 4.5% increase from the same period a year earlier.
The continued growth reflects broader recovery trends in Asia’s international aviation market as corporate travel demand remains resilient despite economic uncertainty in several global markets.
Merger Integration Remains a Key Focus
Analysts expect Korean Air to continue prioritizing major Southeast Asian business destinations even after completing the integration of Asiana Airlines into its operations.
The Jakarta route remains important for maintaining connectivity tied to South Korean investments and supply-chain operations in Indonesia.
Korean Air stated that expanding flight supply would improve convenience for passengers traveling between the two countries while supporting growing demand for corporate and premium travel services.
The airline also said strengthening its Southeast Asian network remains a strategic priority as regional travel demand continues to recover and competition among Asian carriers intensifies.
