JEWAR, India — Akasa Air has partnered with Noida International Airport to establish the airline’s first maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in India, a move that underscores the carrier’s long-term expansion plans and growing demand for domestic aviation infrastructure.

The facility will be located within the premises of Noida International Airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. The project is expected to strengthen India’s aircraft maintenance capabilities while helping airlines reduce their reliance on overseas MRO services.

Akasa Air currently operates a fleet of about 35 aircraft and has placed orders for 226 additional planes as part of its long-term growth strategy.

    Building Domestic Aircraft Maintenance Capability

Akasa Air plans to develop the MRO facility to support a wide range of aircraft maintenance operations. The facility will handle line maintenance, aircraft inspections and other technical services necessary to ensure operational safety and efficiency.

By establishing a domestic maintenance base, the airline aims to streamline aircraft servicing processes and reduce operational downtime. Local maintenance capabilities can significantly improve aircraft turnaround times while allowing airlines to maintain tighter control over maintenance schedules.

For a rapidly expanding airline, access to a dedicated MRO facility can also support more efficient fleet management. As Akasa Air continues to increase its aircraft count, maintaining reliable maintenance infrastructure will be critical to sustaining operational performance.

    Supporting Long-Term Airline Expansion

The project aligns closely with Akasa Air’s broader strategy to expand its network and capacity across both domestic and international markets.

Since launching operations in 2022, the airline has emerged as one of the fastest-growing carriers in India. The airline has transported more than 25 million passengers and steadily expanded its route network to serve multiple destinations.

With hundreds of additional aircraft on order, the airline’s maintenance requirements are expected to increase significantly over the coming years. Establishing its own MRO capability within India allows the carrier to better support this anticipated growth.

The facility will also help the airline build technical expertise and engineering capability within the country’s aviation sector.

Noida International Airport Emerging as Aviation Hub

Noida International Airport is being developed as a major greenfield aviation project intended to serve the National Capital Region and western Uttar Pradesh.

Airport planners are positioning the development as a comprehensive aviation ecosystem that goes beyond passenger operations. In addition to airline services, the airport aims to support cargo operations, aviation businesses and aircraft maintenance facilities.

The addition of Akasa Air’s MRO facility strengthens the airport’s ambition to become a major aviation hub in northern India. The presence of maintenance infrastructure can also attract additional airlines, aviation suppliers and support companies to the region.

Industry observers say that integrating MRO services within airport ecosystems can significantly enhance operational efficiency for airlines operating from the hub.

Growing Need for Local MRO Infrastructure

India’s aviation industry is experiencing rapid growth as passenger demand increases and airlines continue to place large aircraft orders. As fleets expand, the need for reliable and accessible maintenance facilities becomes increasingly important.

Many Indian airlines currently send aircraft abroad for certain maintenance work. Expanding domestic MRO infrastructure can help reduce costs, shorten maintenance cycles and keep aircraft within the country during servicing.

Government authorities have also been encouraging airlines and airport operators to invest in local maintenance capabilities as part of a broader push to strengthen India’s aviation ecosystem.

    Economic and Employment Impact

Beyond aviation operations, the new facility is expected to generate employment opportunities in the region. Aircraft maintenance operations require highly skilled engineers, technicians and support staff.

The development could also contribute to technical training and workforce development in aviation engineering and maintenance.

As India’s aviation sector continues to expand, investments such as the Akasa Air MRO facility are expected to play a key role in supporting sustainable growth and building long-term aviation infrastructure within the country.
