At the meat processing company Vion International, headquartered in Boxtel, 165 employees have been laid off. This mainly concerns people in support departments such as technology and facilities. The unions are unhappy with the social plan for the dismissed employees.

Some employees were notified of their dismissals on Wednesday. The reason is the closure of a branch in Germany that is part of a major reorganization of the meat company.

Due to severance arrangements and “natural attrition”, there are still 45 employees who are redundant, according to the CNV and FNV unions. The unions have been in discussions with Vion in recent months about a so-called social plan. “But Vion indicated that it could not pay much more than what was legally required,” says an FNV spokesperson. CNV confirms this. “Vion had little money for this.”

The fact that Boxtel head office staff are being asked to leave has been confirmed by a source within the company. He says that people in support roles such as technology and facilities are mainly being let go. This also includes employees who have been with the company or its predecessor companies for thirty years or more. This information has been confirmed by the unions.

Vion itself could not be reached for comment Thursday evening. The meat producer has subsidiaries in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. According to the company itself, it employs around 12,000 people there, and in 2022, Vion suffered a loss of 108 million euros. That year, it generated sales of $5.3 billion.
