The Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), in cooperation with colleagues from Belgium, North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, has published new figures on border crossers.

More than 86,000 people worked in the Netherlands as employees in 2021, while living in Germany or Belgium. Conversely, the numbers of those who lived in the Netherlands and worked in neighboring countries are much lower. North and South Limburg and Zeus-Vlaanderen are the Dutch regions with the highest proportion of employees living in Germany or Belgium.

Nearly 44,000 employees crossed the border from Germany to work in the Netherlands, and 42,000 from Belgium. These numbers have remained roughly constant since 2017.

Fewer employees commute from the Netherlands

The number of employees coming to the Netherlands from Belgium and Germany to work in 2021 was much greater than the number moving in the opposite direction. Nearly 7,000 employees from the Netherlands work in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, 1,000 in Lower Saxony, and 11,000 in Flanders. Very few people from the Netherlands work in Wallonia. The number of cross-border travelers from the Netherlands to Belgium has decreased slightly since 2017.

You can read more information in it press release From CBS.
